My husband, by profession, provides a service that few people can perform. The area in which we live is full of people who, at some point, are interested in his service. We are in the process of making upgrades to our business, we have purchased a pre-fabricated out-building to use as an office and display area. The building arrived on our property as a virtual shell. Completely unfinished, we had a bit of work ahead of us to make this building presentable.
The first task was to run electricity to the building. As luck would have it, two days after the building arrived an electrician was interested in my husband's service. They struck up a deal. The electrician would wire the building in exchange for the service. The only thing we would need to purchase would be the fixtures. I mentioned our good fortune at work the next day. My boss told me that he had fixtures to exchange for the service. Within one week, the trades had been made and we had electricity in the new building. We were unable to find anyone to barter the insulation. We did purchase that from the local home improvement store. We are now in the market for carpeting. We have shopped and found some great deals, but I am holding out for a great barter.
We have fencing that needs to be put up as well, I am guessing within a couple of months we will be able to find someone with which to barter that as well. Bartering can get you exactly what you want with absolutely no money out of pocket, if you have something of value to trade.
If you are interested in bartering, you simply need to let people know what you have to trade. A simple Google search on the word 'barter' will result in a plethora of results. Sites like Craigslist have special barter sections. Word of mouth may be the best method to barter. Simply mentioning in casual conversation something that you might be looking for can result in the benefits of a barter. Advertising in your local paper is another excellent way to find people with which to barter.
It would be my recommendation that once you agree on a barter, you put your agreement on paper. Cover all the bases; make sure that you will be protected in the event the other party does not keep their end of the bargain. This is especially true if you do not know the person with whom you are bartering.
Bartering can be a very lucrative endeavor, if you play your cards right. You may ask yourself what you can barter if you do not have a product or service to offer. You may be great at gardening or party planning or any number of activities that you can use for your barter. You only need to determine what you are looking for and then be resourceful in what you offer in return.
