Baseball Drills: Teaching to Throw Further, Faster and More Accurately

Chris Tidwell
Baseball is America's great game, and every kid in our nation has at one point played baseball. One of the major fundamentals in baseball is of course throwing the ball, but you need to train yourself or your team to throw accurately and fast. The following drills will help improve your distance, strength, and accuracy in throwing a ball in baseball.

Catch: Or course, the simple and basic game of catch, but many times the simple and basic are the best. Stand a few feet apart from your partner and just lightly throw the ball back and forth making sure to aim square into your partners glove. After a few successful tosses move a bit further apart and now start over. Make a game out of it, trying to complete ten successive throws and catches then moving five more steps apart. This basic concept will improve everything that has to do with throwing a baseball.

One knee Catch: This is a exercise just like your basic game of catch, but played n one knee. Both players drop to their knee, either their right or left, and then throw the ball to their partner. This concept is a lot harder then it sounds because you can't move your legs to enhance your throw, building your upper body strength, and increasing the distance, and speed at which a player can throw. After a bit make sure you switch you knees because it can become bothersome, and also try to move farther apart after a series of successful catches.

Scoop and Throw: This drill is best done with a coach and player, but any pair of players will do. One player either hits a ground ball with a bat, or rolls a ball simulating a ground ball. The other payer scoops this ball off the ground and immediately throws it back. This drill teaches speed and accuracy as well as being able to act quickly in game situation. After one player has completed a few successful throws then switch up. Also a variation of this drill involves hitting or simulating a pop fly. The distance required for this drill should be about the distance between shot stop and first base to maximize the effectiveness of this drill.

All these drills are very simple and require nothing more then a ball glove, and a partner. Any coach can use them with his or her team and they'll see vast improvements within a week with their team. These drills work fast and are extremely effective at teaching players the fundamentals of baseball all the while improving their accuracy, strength and the distance they can throw a baseball. Practice and repetition of the above drills is one of the key points to improving a player.
