Baseball Statistics: Money Statistics

Unknown
There are many statistics that are available for use to help us determine whether or not a player is worth his contract amount, or if he is getting paid too much or too little. Here we will look at Salary Adjusted $ per Win, Value Runs, Value Wins, and Dollar Valuations

Salary Adjusted $ per Win - This is a very simple statistic. All it is is the salary that a team has for that given year, divided by the number of wins it gets. That is how much a team is paying per win.

(You can find all of these statistics and more at www.fangraphs.com)

Value Runs - These are the sum of Batting, Fielding, Replacement, and Positional stats

Batting - wRAA (Runs Above Average) adjusted for park.

Fielding - A player's UZR or Ultimate Zone Rating

Replacement - The replacement level adjustment set at 20 Runs / 600 PA.

Positional - The positional adjustment set using FanGraph's Values

+12.5 C

+7.5 SS

+2.5 2B/3B/CF

-7.5 LF/RF

-12.5 1B

-22.5 DH

Example: Albert Pujols Value Runs

Batting: 70.1

Fielding: 10.2

Replacement : 21.4

Positional: -11.4

Value Runs: 90.2

Value Wins - Value Runs converted to a wins scale.

Dollar Valuations - Value Wins converted a dollar scale. In 2008, $4.5m = 1 Win

Later we'll look at the top 10 highest paid people in baseball to see if they are actually worth what they are being paid. We will also look at the top bargains and worst rip-offs contract wise. But first, let's look at the Salary Adjusted $ per Win for each team.

Both New York teams, the Yankees and the Mets, were the least efficient in terms of the Salary/Win Ratio. And as you can see, money does not buy championships.

While the Tampa Bay Rays, who went to the ALCS were the most efficient. The Marlins however are efficient only because they seem to not want to sign any player to a long term contract.

Winners

New York Mets saved $11,700,000 on Carlos Beltran

Red Sox/Dodgers saved $9,500,000 on Manny Ramirez

New York Yankees saved $100,000 on Alex Rodriguez

Losers

Los Angeles Dodgers lost $19,500,000 on Andruw Jones

Toronto Blue Jays lost $9,800,000 on Vernon Wells

Detroit Tigers lost $8,900,000 on Miguel Cabrera

New York Yankees lost $5,200,000 on Jason Giambi

Chicago Cubs lost $4,700,000 on Alfonso Soriano

Seattle Mariners lost $3,600,000 on Ichiro Suzuki

New York Yankees lost $3,000,000 on Derek Jeter

Even though Alex Rodriguez's contract caused a lot of eyeballs to explode upon seeing the dollar amount, the Yankees actually saved money; A-Rod was actually worth 100k more than he was paid. I'm trying to hold back my laughter but I can't. The Dodgers paid Andruw Jones $18Million in 2008. He was worth NEGATIVE 1.6. Technically, he should have been paying the Dodgers to play baseball. That is how bad he was.

Unfortunately there is no equivalent Value Runs/Value Wins for pitchers; otherwise we would also be seeing how horrible a Carl Pavano or Barry Zito contract is.
