For Melissa: Who Played and Loves Baseball More Than Anyone I Know
Hair pinned chaotically under her hat
Seductively smiling like a Cheshire cat
She shows no fear in sports combat
She stares you down and readies her pitch
Gloating she watches you sweat and twitch
No room for error, no ill-timed glitch
Just athletic magic from this baseball witch
You pray her ball comes straight your way
You're dreaming now a double play
Swinging at air, dancing comic ballet
Yet for the team, you must save the day
She hurls the ball like a female possessed
You stand determined to give it your best
You're heart is near cardiac arrest
Will the God of sports forsake your quest?
The pitcher relaxes and watches with glee
Heading straight for your ear a mammoth-sized bee
Full swing at the bug you fall to your knees
Remembering forever the ump's..."Striiiiiiike Three!"
