Baseball's All-Time Team

C.E. Butler
I'm a general manager and the task is to put together a 25-man team of the best Hall of Fame baseball players. There's one game to win, so I'm pulling no punches here. My roster would include:

Pitchers
Right-handers Bob Gibson, Cy Young, Nolan Ryan, Tom Seaver and Satchel Paige; left-handers Sandy Koufax, Steve Carlton and Warren Spahn
Since it's one game, I'm going with Young to start the game. Ryan will be used as a closer. Carlton is ready for a late-inning lefty-lefty matchup. If it was a three-game series, the rotation would be Young, Koufax and Gibson.

Catchers
Josh Gibson and Johnny Bench
I've got the best of both worlds here: Gibson's bat and Bench's work behind the dish. Since we're expecting to have plenty of pop in this lineup, Bench gets the nod and Gibson is ready to hit for him in the late innings.

First Basemen
Lou Gehrig and George Sisler
Sisler's going to hit for average and we'll probably need a base hit somewhere late in the game. Gehrig gets the start.

Second Basemen
Rogers Hornsby and Joe Morgan
Not too tough a choice here. Hornsby wasn't called the greatest right-handed hitter of all-time for no reason.

Third Basemen
Brooks Robinson and Mike Schmidt
Another case of choosing defense or offense. Not that Robinson was a slouch with the bat, but he wasn't Schmidt. While I have little doubt Robinson was the better of the two, I'm starting Schmidt and bringing in Brooksie for some late-inning defensive help.

Shortstops
Ernie Banks and Honus Wagner
I'm a Cubs fan so Banks gets the nod. Actually, I just want to tell all my friends I have Honus Wagner waiting to pinch-hit.

Outfielders
Ted Williams, Oscar Charleston, Ty Cobb, Joe DiMaggio, Willie Mays, Hank Aaron and Babe Ruth.
Ah... tough to mess this one up. Let's start Williams in left, Mays in center and Aaron in right. That leaves some mighty pop on the bench.

Batting order
1) Willie Mays, cf; 2) Rogers Hornsby, 2b; 3) Ted Williams, lf; 4) Lou Gehrig, 1b; 5) Hank Aaron, rf; 6) Mike Schmidt, 3b; 7) Ernie Banks, ss; 8) Johnny Bench, c; 9) Cy Young, p.
With my eight-man pitching corps and so many big sticks on the bench, there's a good chance I'll be sending up a pinch-hitter each time the pitcher's spot comes around.

And if a 25-man roster isn't enough, here's the second 25:

Pitchers: Dizzy Dean, Don Drysdale, Dennis Eckersley, Bob Feller, Christy Mathewson, Walter Johnson, Grover Cleveland Alexander, Mordecai Brown

Catchers: Yogi Berra and Roy Campanella

First Basemen: Jimmie Foxx and Willie McCovey

Second Basemen: Charlie Gehringer and Ryne Sandberg

Third Basemen: Frank 'Home Run' Baker and Eddie Mathews

Shortstops: Ozzie Smith and Phil Rizzuto

Outfielders: Lou Brock, Stan Musial, Mickey Mantle, Roberto Clemente, Duke Snider, Goose Goslin and Al Simmons.
