Baseball's Best Lineup of Players Whose Last Names Start with R

Doug Poe
It is unfortunate that Pittsburg has no representatives on the team of best players who names begin with R. It would be fitting that the Pirates have at least one Arrr, the most famous letter in the swashbuckling vocabulary.

Some very good R players have been on the Pittsburg roster, such as Bill Robinson, R.J. Reynolds, and Bob Robertson. However, the talented R's on this team make it nearly impossible for anyone outside of a Hall of Famer to crack the lineup.

First Base - Pete Rose: Charlie Hustle had more hits than anyone to ever play. He won several batting titles with the Reds and three World Series championships before getting tagged with a lifetime ban.

Second Base - Jackie Robinson: the first African-American to play in the Majors, Robinson had an uncanny combination of speed and power for the Dodgers.

Shortstop - Alex Rodriquez: This future Hall of Famer revolutionized the shortstop position, hitting for power and RBI in big numbers for the Mariners, Rangers and Yankees.

Third Base - Brooks Robinson: A human vacuum at the hot corner, Robinson also swung a potent bat to crush over twenty homers a season. He also helped the Orioles to several World Series championships.

Catcher - Ivan Rodriquez: Pudge had speed, power, and an incredible ability to throw out runners.

Outfield 1 - Babe Ruth: The most recognized name in MLB, George Herman Ruth held both the single season and career records for home runs for over a half a century.

Outfield 2 - Frank Robinson: The Hall of Famer collected over 600 home runs, 3000 hits, several World Series championships, two MVP awards, and even a triple crown.

Outfield 3 - Manny Ramirez: The enigmatic slugger has been among the top ten in homers, RBI, and batting average throughout his career with the Indians, Red Sox, and Dodgers.

Designated Hitter - Jim Rice: An underrated key component of the pennant-winning Red Sox of the 70s, Rice had the best combination of power and high average than any of his teammates on those great Boston teams.

Pitcher 1 - Nolan Ryan: The Express holds the all-time record for strikeouts and shutouts. He also earned 300 wins and finished with numerous one-hitters, using his tremendous fastball.

Pitcher 2 - Robin Roberts: The Phillies legend came up just shy of the exclusive 300 win club, but he still ranks among the all-time great hurlers in strikeouts and ERA.

Pitcher 3 - Eppa Rixey: The one-time commissioner won nearly 300 games for the Reds and Phillies during his playing days.

Relief Pitcher - Mariano Rivera: The closer during the Yankees dynasty of the late 90s and early 00s, Rivera is on his way to becoming the all-time leader in saves.
