Basement 101: Man Cave

Eric Brennan
Turn your basement into the ultimate all-weather man cave! Enjoy year round fun with your own personal man cave by remodeling your basement. But before you start moving in the pool tables and bar, check out these basic ideas for basement man caves.

Sports

One of the most common themes in every nearly every man cave, sports can cover a wide spectrum of designs, colors and well, sports. Hockey, baseball, football, soccer, rugby-you get the picture. Sports are a vast topic.

Construct 101 Tip: Focusing on one particular sport rather than one team adds focus while still allowing freedom to add variety.

The Bar

Another popular theme for a basement man cave is installing a bar. But before you start breaking out the bar stools and booze, it's wise to locate the plumbing. Center that area in your plans for a basement bar. A sink is always an invaluable tool when serving any drinks.

Construct 101 Tip: Don't just focus on the booze. Bringing other amenities into the bar like a jukebox, pool table and neon signs add a realistic touch to this man cave theme.

Movie Theater

Some basement man caves are dedicated to the home theater. Plasma televisions, surround sound and comfortable seating are must-haves for any basement man cave home theater. Applying acoustic ceiling tiles are definitely recommended for soundproofing your man cave theater from the upstairs occupants.

Construct 101 Tip: Purchase the most comfortable specialized theater furniture you can afford. You can have the best television and surround sound, but if you're not comfortable, then who wants to watch it?

Music

Another theme many man cave owners consider is musical. From full fledged musicians to the casual listener, musical themed man caves include sound equipment, musical instruments and a stage. Man caves with this theme can vary from rock to rap and everything in between!

Construct 101 Tip: Make certain your man cave is built with a new service panel installed down stairs off of the main feed to the house. This will ensure any heavy electrical loads from sound equipment, amplifiers and instruments don't blow out the fuse panel.

Motorcycle

This basement man cave theme is gaining in popularity in part to the mainstreaming of the culture through network television shows. From classic Harleys to speed demon street bikes, motorcycles provide any man cave motorcycle manic with the perfect room to relax and enjoy a cold one after a ride on the hog.

Construct 101 Tip: Metal tool racks make an excellent place for a nifty bar. Some metal tool racks even have a built in refrigerator and CD player. It's the perfect place to store and pour drinks and look cool doing it!
