Basic Information About Herbal Supplements

It is a well-known fact that traditional medications have become more expensive, and even increasingly harmful. The same things applies to many over-the-counter versions that you typically use in place of prescription medications. Most people have turned to herbal supplements in the hopes of not only saving money, but also getting better medicinal results.

Herbal supplements are not categorized as drugs by the FDA, and therefore do not have to meet the strict standards that regular medications must adhere to. The basic guidelines that the FDA has set up for these medications is related to the proof that they require to submit, such a successful testing in a clinical atmosphere. Herbal supplements do not have to follow these rules.

Herbal supplements are also known as dietary supplements because they are usually taken when used in conjunction with diet and exercise. The main regulation of herbal supplements is that they have to make sure to include a disclaimer that states that the ingredients found in the supplements are not designed to replace proper diet and exercise, but meant as an added benefit.

The most dangerous concern that you should worry about with herbal supplements is that fact that there are many fraudulent versions of the name brand herbal supplements. More often than not, the fraudulent supplements are the ones who are responsible for life threatening accidents. This is due to the fact that they are not made exactly the same, and those who have made them will combine mixtures that can actually interact negatively with one another.

When considering the use of an herbal supplement, there is no advice that will ever compare to that of your physician. It is always vital to discuss any changes that you make to yourself with your doctor, and this includes dieting, exercising, and taking any kind of medication, regardless of whether it is herbal or not. Only your doctor can tell you what is best for you, based on your medical history.

Remember that for your own safety, you should always research the herbal supplements that you are thinking about taking. You need to know what the side effects are, if any, and the frequency that you should take them. You should know the directions like the back of your hand.

Also remember, for your own safety, not to stop taking any other medications that you shouldbe taking, or replace any medications with herbal supplements. You need to consult your doctor before you attempt this. You do not know what kind of a reaction you will have to the ingredients of the supplement, or how it will interact with the medications that you are on. Remember: these supplements have not proven their results in a clinical setting, so they cannot be proven to really work.
