Bread machines are very helpful appliances, and all work to provide the user a way to create delicious home-baked bread at home, with minimal effort and time. Bread machines are self-contained kitchen appliances that stir, mix, knead and bake all in the same machine, so you can be doing other things instead of kneading bread. Some machines also have a timer so you can add ingredients and have it made ahead of time.

There are many different models out there for bread machines. Different models will have different features, like crust settings, color of crust, and even special settings for a low-carb bread, since those bread generally will be stiffer. Other models will have special dispensers for adding ingredients into the bread, like nuts.

While there are many to choose from, they all operate on the same basic method: mix the ingredients, knead the dough, then bake it. For those that are interested in a purchasing a bread machine for the home, here are basic instructions for bread making appliances, so you can have an idea of what you are getting into.

The first step is to measure all your ingredients, and have them ready. Liquid ingredients, such as milk, water and eggs, should all be at room temperature and not cold. Read the recipes carefully as some will require the temperature be a specific reading, like 80 degrees, so the use of a thermometer will be helpful.

Open up the lid to the bread machine and remove the bread pan. Most models will have a bread pan with a handle for easy lifting and removing of the bread. Insert the accompanying paddle attachment for the machine.

Add in the ingredients to the pan in the order recommended by the manufacturer. Most models will have you add the liquid ingredients first, like the eggs or water, then the dry ingredients. The leavening should always be placed in last, usually inside a small well that was made in the dry ingredients. Leaveners include yeast, baking soda and baking powder.

Lower the bread pan in the machine and affix the lid. Turn the machine on, and then make all your choices. Different machines will have different selections, but common ones are crust control and loaf size. Make all your choices based on the type of bread being baked and what ingredients were used in the bread.

Once you hit the start button, the mixing and baking part will begin. Raw doughs are easily made in the bread machines as well, for example, pizza doughs so you can have fresh bread baked in your oven without the mess and work of actual kneading.
