Basic Nutrition for Cats

Keith Dailey
The cat's digestive tract is shortened and optimized for proteins from meat, making them obligate carnivores. Cats have a physical inability to process plant materials, but this does not restrain them from nibbling on plants occasionally. A lot of theories have come up as to why cats would want to nibble plants; some say they are looking for supplementary vitamins or minerals, some claim they are doing so to balance a troubling digestion, some claim they simply relish the taste of plants, still it can be a combination of all these factors. No tangible reason has ever been found regarding this matter.

Luckily, today you don't have to worry about your cat missing out on specific nutrients, or worry about going out to hunt for food. By walking in a pet store, you will find numerous varieties of nutritionally balanced foods to suit your cat's tastes. Important to note is that cats don't require a wide variety hence you should pick one that they like and stick to it. Your choice should be good quality food which of course makes a noticeable difference in the appearance and general health of your pet.

Of importance to put in mind while getting your cat's food is that the nutritional requirements hugely vary with the age and size of your pet. Similarly, the instructions found on the bag should be followed to the letter to avoid overfeeding or underfeeding. For example, an average adult cat will need a cupful of food daily. Avoid changing the food type regularly which tends to make the cats picky eaters.

How would it feel eating your food and people are stepping on you? Awful right? Cats too feel the same way hence you should keep their feeding bowls on low traffic areas. Further, you should feed them at the same time each day, cats too appreciate consistency.

Avoid feeding human food such as raw liver or chocolate to your pet, in addition to being toxic to cats, they also upset their digestive systems. If you want to give cooked meat, such as pork or poultry meat, ensure you remove all bones. They tend to be prone to breakages and obviously they will injure your pet.

There are many reasons that you may wish to switch foods for your pet. The pet may have outgrown the food or your store may have stopped stocking your brand. In case you have to switch; it is only wise that you do so gradually, say over the course of a week. This helps prevent any digestive upsets.

While others are against feeding treats, other people lavish treats. Conversely, feeding treats are not mandatory. There are various good treats in the market today. But, be advised that overindulging your cat may be risky therefore you should go through the directions of feeding treats carefully. Finally, your cat requires a constant supply of fresh water. It only takes a little thought, some planning and caring to keep a healthy and contented pet for a long period of time.
