The internet makes everything more convenient. People like to keep track of their bills online and shop online. Everything is quite literally at your fingertips. The easiest way to get your money or identity stolen is online. People can do a lot of damage with your credit card or social security number so whenever you buy anything or do anything that involves releasing private information you should check to make sure it is safe. Most browsers have a lock icon to indicate that you are using a secure website. If you are buying something online and the website does not offer secure purchasing, you should think twice.
Of course, there are more ways in which you can put yourself in danger online. A lot of social networking sites are fun and a great way to bring people together. But there are a lot of people out there that use websites like that for fraud or to pray on young children. You never know who could be on the other side of a Myspace message. If you get a message from strangers, don't reply. Decline friend request from people you don't know.
Many people use social networking sites to try to meet up with people. This could lead to stalking, rape or even murder. Never agree to meet someone you met online. You never know what their true intentions are or even who they really are. Some people use fake names and pictures to lure their victims. You should also never tell someone your address online. You never know if they will try to come to your house to stalk you.
Yet others still use websites like Myspace and Facebook to try to extort money from you. You can always spot these cyber-solicitors when they message you with something like "I make $1000 a day! We're looking for more people like you!" These people will try to get money from you by drawing you into pyramid scams or illegal activities.
There are even others who just pray on people in chat rooms and social networking sites to spread viruses or trojans. Protect yourself and your computer by deleting unknown emails and messages.
These are just a few simple tips to keep in mind when you're surfing the net. It's great to put the internet to good use and make it work for you to its full potential but you should be safe to avoid headaches and problems.
