Basic Tips to Get into Kayaking

Roger C.
Every expert in any discipline started out as a beginner, so if you want to become really good at something, you need to start with the basics and kayaking is no the exception. This is a great sport because it takes place outdoors and you can enjoy the scenery around when paddling the water under your kayak. It is a great way to enjoy a pleasurable moment surrounded by nature and make some exercise at the same time.

This sport can also be practiced in groups and by doing so you can strengthen your relationship with your couple, family or friends. By practicing kayaking in groups, not only you will enjoy a pleasurable and bonding experience, you will also be taking an additional safety measure because if something goes wrong there will be people ready to help you out.

The first aspects of this sport that you must get familiar with, are all the safety measures, and a basic understanding on how the kayak works. For this reason, you should make all your initial practice exercises in calm waters and with the supervision of your instructor. When you practice things on your own without any kind of supervision, be sure to be close to your home and try to have at least a friend o someone watching you or you can go to a public place with kayaking facilities, because other people can help you in case of an accident.

In case you want to make kayaking your principal hobby, you should consider buying your own equipment instead of renting or borrowing every time you go out. This is a good idea for several reasons. In the long run, you will be saving money because every time you use your own equipment is one more time you save on the rent. Another reason is because if you choose your equipment right and you maintain it properly, you will be sure that your equipment is in good condition when you use it, and also you will get more used to your equipment and you'll get more confident.

Before adventuring in the water, make safety your first concern. Never forget to wear a life jacket when you are in the water; the life jacket you use must fit you well, and able to keep you afloat. Also choose carefully your paddles because they are your means of propulsion. Consider paddles that are right for you convenient and strong. Once you have your equipment ready, you need to start learning how to position yourself in the kayak, maintain balance and start your first paddling exercise.

Learn all the basics before trying to advance to more complicated stuff and always keep in mind that is better to learn from a qualified instructor. Then get some equipment and enjoy kayaking.
