Plan on a budget. This is the first and most important factor when choosing where to go on your honeymoon. Creating a budget that you and your loved one are the most comfortable with will help in narrowing down your choices. If you have close to a limitless budget, your options are endless. From the waters of Tahiti to an extravagant nature-induced vacation in New Zealand, your decision can be based off of your idea of a "dream trip" rather than worrying on the money being spent. On the other hand, when money is tight consider going on an all-inclusive trip to Mexico or the Caribbean instead. The all-inclusive factor will lend itself to a stress-free vacation once you're at your destination. Another great option would be to consider a cruise for a budget-friendly trip.
Check your calendar. The amount of time you have to dedicate to a honeymoon trip will definitely alter your vacation plans. If you've always dreamed of going to Europe for your honeymoon, plan for two full days of traveling there and back. This may cause an indent in your plans and force you to re-think your destination. The same can be said about Hawaii, whose travel time is comparable to a trip abroad. If you only have a weekend's time, consider going somewhere close to home, like Las Vegas or California's wine country.
Passport and Visa Requirements. Make sure you have plenty of time to get your passport current and have any visas required. To avoid confusion, women are advised to make reservations under their maiden name and wait until returning to legally change a name after marriage. This will ensure that you are not left waiting for your changed passport to arrive in time for the trip.
Make time to relax. It goes without saying that a honeymoon should be a time for couples to unwind from the big day. However, often times this very basic notion goes out the door, as couples scramble to do and see as much as is humanly possible. However, make it a conscious effort to relax on the first day upon arrival - this means no scheduled tours or activities. Also, make sure to turn the t.v. off in the evenings and focus on one another instead.
Planning a honeymoon isn't easy, but it should most certainly be an enjoyable experience. Have fun with it and learn to compromise. After all, isn't this the first rule of marriage?
