Whenever there is computer problem in my family or friends, I am usually the first to call. I do not have any advance or even intermediate knowledge of computer nor have I ever taken apart or build a computer. Yet all the problems I solved could have been easily avoided if they follow these tips.

Deleting Temporary Internet Files

You should do this once a week. If you ever get infected with spam-ware or ad-ware, these tiny files will get hit as well and they will show up in thousands if you don't regularly clean them. Make sure you delete all forms including cookies.

It is under control panel à internet options -> Browsing history

Stop using Internet Explorer

Most people are still using internet explorer and out of those people; they are using a very old version of IE. Some are still using what the pc desktop provides. There are so much better options like Mozilla's Firefox and Google's Chrome. If you really like internet explorer at least update to the newest version

Update Update Update

Update your antivirus program and update your windows (windows update). There are many times big problems can be avoided if people check to see if there are updates. Antivirus program works when you do biweekly updates. If not then you basically risking your computer as they become less useful without updates. Microsoft periodically provides updates to windows whether it's for security, improvements or general patching on some bugs/fixes.

Easiest way to do this is have windows update and the antivirus program auto update every week or every month. Make sure that you let the updates download and install before you shutdown your computer.

Anti-Virus/Malware/Spam 101

Have a reliable antivirus program and listen to it only. Everything else (popup, message, warning, flashing perhaps, scans) is a scam, virus or virus /scam combo. Never have 2 antivirus programs working at the same time. 2 is not better than 1. Norton/ Symantec are outdated. MacAfee is also outdated. They were good in 2000's. Better programs can be gotten for free such as AVG or Avast. (Both can be gotten at download.com)

Besides checking for updates, doing weekly (quick) scan and once a month full scan; you should avoid all pop ups and window screen saying you have a problem. Such as "Your computer is being scan, click here", Warning you have been infected, click here to solve it" or any of the buttons (Ok, Continue, Cancel, Next). If it says Windows 2009/2010 antivirus scanner, do not be fool. IT IS FAKE. Only listen to your own program such as AVG or Avast (or something better in the future)

Never click on any pop ups or window screens that suddenly appear. Never click ok or cancel or close here. They are all booby traps. Either:

A.) X out the window (top right corner)

B.) CRTL ALT DEL (task manager) and force quit the window. Sometimes the best pop up blocker get loophole and they still pop up.

Google/Bing/Yahoo
Whatever problem you have, you can always Google/Bing/Yahoo your answer. There are alot of people out in the cyberspace that has your exact problem and there are those that are willing to help. Of course, never listen to people about buying this or that; Go Here, Click Here. Most of the time, the good answer are the one that are detail and well written. I suggest you invest in looking up the answer instead of paying someone like Best Buy Geek Squad. Those people will destroy your computer as their answer is basically do a full install/removal.

  • Updating your computer is like having the latest and greatest thing.
  • Stop Clicking anywhere inside a Pop Up Ad
  • The methods that scams come up with to catch people.
I myself have been caught once by a pop up ad. It was for the Windows 2009 Defender/ Virus scanner and carelessly click cancel. It was pretty ingenious and felt how if I got caught; can't imagine all the non informative computer users in the world.
