Basic Ways to Boost Computer Speed

Eric Bailey
Efficient computer usage is practically a necessity in modern society, considering the prevalence of computing in affecting our personal, social, and business lives. In addition to providing much of our workforce power, our laptops and desktop units also enhance our communications, publishing, creativity, accounting, and other activities.

Because it is so frequently and importantly used, the computer someone owns or operates should ideally operate smoothly, quickly, and without issues. However, many people do experience system slowdown; a problem that can have many sources, but fortunately has many fixes as well. There are even a few critical assistances that can be pursued at no cost, entirely using resources that are already available on most PCs.

Shedding Excess

Through the Add/Remove Programs feature that comes on the Control Panel of Windows versions, a user can remove unwanted, unnecessary, or repeated items with just a few clicks. Even on non-Windows machines, it is a wise habit to regularly check hard drives for duplicate or undesired files, deleting them liberally. This frees up memory that helps the computer act faster and better perform its functions.

Disk Cleanup and Defragmentation

Another built-in program specifically for optimizing PC performance are the Disk Cleanup and Defragmentation tools of system maintenance in Control Panel. These programs automatically search the hard drive for fragmented, unutilized, non-optimized, or otherwise out-of-place files and clusters, then work to fix the issues while informing the user. This should also be done regularly, and most operating system versions will allow this to be set up to be done automatically on a schedule, as well.

Freeware Fixes

Even when the user has done a thorough self-check, then taken advantage of the built-in tools in place, there are further options to completely facilitate the speeding-up of the unit. A simple search-engine session can easily locate free programs online specifically designed to perform the above functions and more, working to free up more memory and increase the processor's capacity to work at its highest possible levels in its environment. One must use common sense, though, and not download software that does not seem reputable, or come from a suspicious source.

With these tactics in place, a user can promptly and powerfully quicken the pace of their PC or laptop model. Whether the computer in question was sluggish and needed a tune-up, or it was already roaring steadily and just needed some routine maintenance, these methods can ensure a long-term, satisfactory performance for multiple tasks.
