Basic Yoga Techniques for Babies

Jonna Norris
Yoga focuses on bringing together the mind, body and spirit through meditative poses. It is an age-old and embraced form of exercise for adults. It is becoming ever more popular with new mothers wanting to use the exercise for the health benefits it provides for babies.

Practicing yoga with your baby is said to help calm him or her while providing a fun way to exercise. Granted, your baby won't be practicing the side crane pose, but he or she will work body parts and stimulate physical development while having a good time. Here are some basic yoga techniques that you can do with your baby at home.

Knees to chest: This technique is just as it sounds. First, lay your baby on a blanket or mat on the floor on his or her back. Gently move your baby's knees to his or her chest. Hold this position for a few seconds, then release. Stroke your baby's legs to help him or her relax, then repeat the exercise. This yoga techniques is said to aid in the release of gas, helping to ease an upset stomach (and even colic) in your baby.

Downward Dog: This popular yoga pose can be done with babies as well. In fact, most babies perform this pose naturally when he or she is learning to stand and walk. In this position, your hands and feet are placed on the floor while you push your buttocks into the air (think of how a dog looks when it stretches). The exercise helps strengthen your child's legs and back, and he or she will think it is hilarious to peek at you upside down.

Happy Baby Pose: This technique helps relieve stress on your baby's back, as well as stretch the hamstrings. First lay your baby flat on his or her back on the floor. Bring your baby's knees to the chest, then open the knees and bring them toward the armpits. Gently hold this position for a few seconds then slowly lower the baby's feet back to the floor.

Whether or not you yourself practice yoga, you can still bet that practicing yoga with your baby will strengthen your bond, help you become familiar with your baby's cues, and allow you to have fun with your baby. So, go ahead. Try the downward dog with your tot. You just might enjoy yourself and get some exercise in the process.
