Most Ouija boards are simple. The alphabet, yes, no, goodbye, symbols, and other simple words are included on the actual board. A planchette comes with the board, usually made of plastic with a clear viewing window. Two or more people will place their hands lightly on the planchette, and the communicating spirit will direct it to spell out responses. Some will place a candle near the board. The flickering of the candle is supposed to indicate the presence of a spirit.
Most agree that caution must be exercised with the use of a board. There exist many rules for Ouija board use from a wide range of sources. Some rules that are accepted among many include:
- Never use an Ouija board alone.
- Do not allow spirits to count down through the numbers or alphabets.
- Always "close" the board before ending a session.
- Be cautious of obsession with the board.
- Never leave the planchette on the board - do not take your hand off it until the spirit has been dismissed.
- Never ask a spirit when you will die or if you will go to heaven or hell.
- Do not use a board without an experienced user being present.
- Always ask any spirit you communicate with their name first. If they refuse to give it to you, end the conversation immediately.
- Remember that advice given by the spirits is the same as that given by the living: it may or may not be good advice.
Whether to use an Ouija board or not is a personal decision. Ignorant use of a board can lead to some very unpleasant to downright dangerous consequences. If you do decide to use a board, please take into consideration the guidelines above and exercise great caution.
