Baskin Robbins 5 Flavors Retired: Company Changes Product Line

National Ice Cream Day 2010 Met with Sadness by Some Flavor Lovers

Meg G.
Baskin Robbins 31 Flavors brings back a lot of memories. Some of my favorite childhood delicacies have been long retired, and now as an adult I understand why. Companies need to change and offer customers something new - a reason to come back - if they want to stay in business. This is of little consolation to some customers who come in for their big craving, only to find it missing from the lineup.

The five retired flavors for 2010 are: French Vanilla, Carmel Praline Cheesecake, Campfire S'Mores, Apple Pie a la Mode, and Superfudge Truffle.

Out of these amazing recipes, one of them was the first that Irv Robbins and Bert Baskins created. In 1945, French Vanilla was created by adjusting the recipe of vanilla ice cream to include egg yolks. This gives the flavor the richer taste. Although this flavor is an icon, it's also one of the more boring flavors. The company is likely making room for something a big more phenomenal.

The youngest of the retired flavors is Superfudge Truffle, which debuted in 2007. Admittedly, this flavor is delicious, but it lacks that specialty ice cream flavor. You can get a comparable flavor in your grocer's freezer via Haagen Daas.

Campfire S'Mores is a unique recipe whose origins go back to 1970. If it's too hot of a summer day to consider heading out to a campfire, this was a great item to order to enjoy a cold treat on a sweltering day. I will miss this one. I will also miss Apple Pie a la Mode, which came out in 1976. Both these flavors are older than I am, and so I grew up on them.

There's no official word on what five flavors will replace those placed in the "Deep Freeze" vault. Over the years, there have been many product retirements and the company has produced thousands of different tastes for everyone to enjoy.

If one of your favorite dishes is fixin to get the boot, rest assured knowing that you will be able to savor it until supplies are gone. At many locations that could mean you have a couple of more weeks to stock up one last time.
A fun way to replace the 5 "deep frozen" recipes would be to host a contest where people from the community would get to submit their suggestions. This could help inspire creativity and perhaps find the company their next iconic trademark.

If you're in the Memphis area, there is a Baskin Robbins 31 Flavors in both Germantown and Millington.
