Bathing trunk nevus is a rare medical condition that produces dark colored patches on the skin, which are often hairy. These patches are present at birth and can cover large areas of the body, commonly the upper arms and thighs but can occur on the trunk of the body as well. Most often, the lesions appear brown or bluish black in color and many contain hair. Typically, the lesions are smooth, similar to a wart. While the exact cause of bathing trunk nevus is unknown, it is believed it occurs due to complications or defects that occur in the womb. It appears the condition may be hereditary as well. It is not uncommon for those with this condition to suffer from other birth defects also. There appears to be an increased risk for melanoma skin cancer in those with bathing trunk nevus.

Diagnosis

Proper diagnose of bathing trunk nevus is usually conducted shortly after birth. Typical diagnostic tools include a physical evaluation. In some cases, a biopsy is conducted to determine if the cells may become cancerous. Due to the emotional consequences that are associated with the condition because of the appearance it causes, it is not uncommon for psychological treatment to be needed. Depression, emotional problems, and socialization complications are common occurrences in those with bathing trunk nevus.

Complications

As previously stated, bathing trunk nevus can be associated with other birth defects, which include the growth of pigment producing cells within the head, known as leptomeningeal melanocytosis. If this condition is present as well, it can cause motor function abnormalities and seizures. Bathing trunk nevus can also develop into melanoma as well, a form of skin cancer. Those with spina bifida can also have bathing trunk nevus. Although bathing trunk nevus can develop into cancer, the overall prognosis of the condition is not threatening and a normal lifespan can be achieved.

While the physical complications of bathing trunk nevus are relatively slim, the psychological complications of the condition are far greater, especially if the lesions appear on areas of the body that are not easy to cover with clothing. Self confidence issues often arise due to the appearance of the lesions, which can result in social complications, depression, feelings of isolation, and other emotional complications. These issues must be addressed to improve the quality of life a person with this condition experiences. It is essential they overcome the psychological and emotional results of this condition.
