Bathroom Remodeling on a Budget

If your bath is out of date, unorganized, and cluttered it may be time to do some remodeling. Remodeling your bath can be achieved on a small budget. Here are a few helpful ideas to get you started. Storage can be a big issue in any bathroom. You can use wall shelving to help solve this problem. You can use shelving to store your towels and other items. Even if you don't have the budget to expand your linen closet there are still other ways to make room for your extra items. Another idea is to buy a small bookshelf or maybe even a corner bookshelf. You can find all types of shelving and bookshelves at any home improvement store. Also, try buying decorative boxes or hat boxes to store items like deodorant or toothpaste. You can leave these decorative boxes out by placing them inside the bookshelves or on top of the wall shelves. These work great to hide personal items.

One thing to keep in mind when remodeling your bathroom is wall color. Pick a color that is pleasing to you. Remember that a dark paint color (like navy blue or dark brown) will make a room seem smaller. You can choose a bold color without going too dark. However, if you prefer wallpaper, then go for it! If you have walls that are flat with no texture, then try paint-able wallpaper. Paint-able wallpaper has a texture that looks like it's embossed. Once you put it up you can paint it any color. This would save a bundle of cash in contractor fees for plastering and painting. Also, the paint-able wallpaper is great for older walls with bumps or dents because it covers so well.

Flooring is almost always on the list when remodeling. If you have old vinyl floors you can repaint them. You will need to prime them first and then paint any color you wish on the surface. The key to painting the floor is the polyurethane top coat. You will need four to six coats of polyurethane. Make sure the polyurethane is water based because oil base polyurethane will yellow lighter colors like white. You can get more information on painting the floor by viewing my article, "How to Paint Vinyl Flooring."

Picking out matching bathroom rugs, towels, or shower curtains are another obvious choice. However, you could always make your own shower curtain. Find some fabric you like and sew one yourself or have a seamstress sew one for you. Then, all you need is to purchase a shower curtain liner to go underneath.

One design idea you may want to keep in mind is to be sure to removing items that may be considered clutter. Also, mirrors can make a bath seem larger so adding a mirror could be beneficial. Light fixtures with multiple lightbulb sockets are a great way for adding more light. Window film is an excellent Way to allow natural light in, but at the same time provide privacy for your windows. These are just some of the ways you could spruce up your old bath and save some money.
