Batman Reboot Coming After 'The Dark Knight Rises'

A new Batman reboot will follow the release of "The Dark Knight Rises" by Christopher Nolan in 2012. Apparently the plan is to tie the character into a new "Justice League" movie that will combine most of the famous characters under the DC Comics logo. The team of Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman will try to make for one rather large release, and it has the potential to be a huge movie if it is done correctly. That is a huge "if," though, and it could be hurt by the fact that most of the characters will need a big-name actor to play them.

According to Empire Online, a release of this movie is already tentatively scheduled for 2013, but that really doesn't give producers much time to put it together. They aren't even close to finishing "The Dark Knight Rises" yet, and the expectation is that there will have to be an entirely new casting call for the actor who will take over the helm of Batman. That isn't the only character they still need to cast, and the success of a Justice League movie could hinge on how well Zack Snyder's Superman plays with fans of the genre.

"Superman: Man of Steel" will star Henry Cavill when it comes out, and that won't even be until December of 2012. That is almost zero lead time to gauge if audiences like Cavill, and if they will turn out to watch a Justice League movie in 2013. Maybe Ryan Reynolds will have a lot of success this summer with "The Green Lantern," and that will help create buzz for the next comic-book picture he decides to participate in. At this point we would only be guessing about which superheroes are going to be invited to "join" the Justice League this time around.

The most shocking revelation here is that Christian Bale is about to end his reign as the Dark Knight before he is even out of our memories. Trying to reboot franchises is something we have to expect as moviegoers, because we keep telling Hollywood (with our wallets) that we are willing to pay money to see the same story done in a different manner. Now Hollywood is trying to be prepared to give us another Batman who probably won't hold a candle to the one Bale has inhabited. Luckily it looks like Nolan will be involved with the production of the Justice League film, so at least there will be a little continuity.

The upcoming film starring the characters of DC will be called "Justice League: Mortal" at this point.
