Batteries Not Included: Classic 80's Movie

Karl Fitzner
Batteries Not Included is one of the most memorable films of the 80's. A lighthearted picture where a hard reality meets adorable sci-fi creatures. Tiny robot toys come alive to save a café and apartment building targeted for demolition.

Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy head up a cast which does an excellent job of drawing the viewer into their world of Batteries Not Included. Hugh and Jessica, who were married in real life, play married couple Frank and Faye Riley. Frank has his hands full taking care of the café and Faye, who has withdrawn into her own world since the death of their son.

The owner of the apartment building has moved out almost all the residents. He aims to have the building demolished so a new high rise can be constructed. Frank and Faye along with a few others are resisting but the outcome seems inevitable. Lacey, the owner, begins to play rough by sending in a street gang to terrorize the remaining tenants.

In the middle of all this turmoil the Fix-its arrive. They are tiny robot flying saucers looking for a place to raise their own family. Suffering from a compulsion to fix anything broken, they begin to repair items around the building. Of course, this causes nothing but confusion for the gang trying to drive everyone out of the building.

Late in the movie the Fix-its have a child, but it is lifeless. The building maintenance man figures it is because the batteries are not included so he rigs a power supply to charge the young one. Yes it works.

If you do not remember I will not spoil the rest of the story. If you have not seen "Batteries Not Included" it is worth the price. If you have then you already know it is worth seeing again.

Reply to Kofi. Two or three times when it first came out and every few years since. Probably around 10 times.
