Battery Recycling: Where to Dispose of Used Batteries Safely

A lot of our favorite toys and tools are powered by batteries, but batteries don't live forever, and when they die, we have to dispose of them. And, like a lot of other conveniences of the modern world, batteries should not be thrown away and end up in a landfill, but should be recycled. The good news is that battery recycling is getting easier and easier with more and more collection spots.

A lot of companies offering battery recycling are companies with many locations, each of which, or some of which offer battery recycling; some companies are local. The following list includes both kinds, with the local companies being in the Dallas/For Worth metropolitan area. Before taking your used batteries to any of these places for recycling, contact them first to find out hours, regulations, etc.

Places to recycle batteries

Home Depot (many locations)

Lowe's recycles batteries on a store-by-store basis. Call your local store(s) to find out if recycling is offered.

Batteries Plus (many locations) recycles lead acid batteries from cars and trucks, nickel cadmium batteries from cordless phones and tools, nickel metal hydride batteries from camcorders, bar code scanners and digital cameras, lithium ion or lithium polymer batteries from cell phones and laptops.

Interstate Batteries recycles single-use batteries, car batteries, NiCad batteries and rechargeable batteries. Consumers call 888-USA-4001 or email recycle@ibsa.com for information on battery recycling.

Garland Recyclers Inc. recycles batteries as well as other electronics, electronics scrap, and metals, including aluminum cans.

In addition to batteries of all types, the following items are also accepted: acids, aerosol cans, antifreeze, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, paints, fertilizer, fluorescent and compact fluorescent light bulbs.
