Battle Creek Field of Flight Air Show and Balloon Festival in Michigan

Discover What the Battle Creek Air Show Has to Offer Each Year

Kristen Wilkerson
Each year Battle Creek, Michigan, hosts an air show. From super fast jet stunts to hot air balloons, the air show amazes many who attend and live in the area. Each year's air show has a slightly different title. In 2011, the title of the show is the "Battle Creek Field of Flight Air Show and Balloon Festival." This article discusses some of the air show's annual features.

The Battle Creek Field of Flight Air Show and Balloon Festival is a time honored tradition in Battle Creek. Several sponsors, including Coca-Cola and the Battle Creek Bombers, help fund an amazing show. There is a cost for admission and parking, which varies from year to year, but the fee covers in and out privileges for the entire day. To find out more specific costs for a particular year, visit the official air show website.

The Army typically sets up their tent next to a flight simulator. For free, the Army engraves dog tags with the date of the air show and a child or adult's name. They provide information about their program and have military officials present to answer questions about the Army.

A flea market atmosphere also pervades the air show. A long row of vendors set up their tents, displaying colorful wares including homemade leather goods, walking sticks, sunglasses, jewelry, and more. One vendor brings a miniature plane for kids to sit in and sells their photograph. There are also fun carnival-like vendors selling elephant ears and other delicious snacks.

Some jets and helicopters are open to the public. Pilots help usher children into a pilot's seat for a unique experience as well. At night fireworks fill the sky as the crowd watches with delight.

While experiencing all these events, jets fly in formation overhead. Sometimes they barrel roll, leave sky trails, or go really high until they stall and plummet back to earth. Bi-plane pilots also perform tricks, astounding the crowd with their classic maneuvers. Hot air balloons float above, craning spectators' necks as they attempt to take colorful photos.

Overall, the ambiance of the Battle Creek Air Show is a safe, family-friendly environment. It is an excellent way to spend a day with the kids as well as an educational opportunity.

The air show's current location is 3140 5th Avenue, Battle Creek, MI 49037. Photos from the 2010 air show are available as well. The dates for the 2011 air show are from July 1 - July 4.
