Battle Cry

A Poem Describing Becoming a Soldier in God's Army

Alisande

Lord, I surrender,
This battle's too great.
I've set down my weapons
You now hold my fate.
The enemy has got me
to a point of defeat;
There's no way to win,
unless I retreat.
So here I am Lord,
waiting at your feet.
Without your help,
I can't compete.

My shield has been battered,
My sword is broke,
My helmet is slipping,
My breastplate's in smoke,
My girdle is loosened,
My shoes are lost!
My armor is a wreck, Lord,
I can't face the cost.

What would you want
with a mess like me?
I'm really not a soldier
Oh, Lord, can't you see?
I'm scared and I'm tired,
I want to go home
Please, don't send me back, Lord,
I can't go alone.

"Come here, my child,
it's time for a rest.
You're safe in my arms,
it was only a test."

I guess I failed this one
look at me -
I'm a mess!
I'm all in pieces,
I have such distress!

"But when you were broken,
what did you learn?
When life overwhelmed you,
where did you turn?"

Oh, Father, I cried,
You know I need you!
Why did you hide from me
and not see me through?

"My child, I never left you,
I'm always near.
But I want you to see
there's no need to fear.
Sometimes I let you prove
what you already know,
that is the lesson that
truly makes you grow."

You smoothed my shield,
You strengthened my sword;
My helmet you straightened,
My breastplate restored;
You tightened my girdle,
and found me new shoes;
My armor was ready
now, how could I lose!

My weapons were polished
and how they did shine!
Then you took my hand
and WE went back to the line!
I'm still a bit shaken,
so I let you take the lead,
I won't take my eyes off you,
It's your Word I must read,
That's where I find you,
that's where I must look.
Oh, Lord, how many times
I forgot to open your Book!

All the plans have been written,
the enemy's exposed,
If I follow your Word,
I'll defeat all my foes!
You already know
that the battle's been won,
Why am I frightened
when it's already done?

Thank you, my dear Lord,
for putting me on my feet,
And helping me see
I CANNOT suffer defeat!
