Lexington is a small quaint town in Missouri. It is the place where North and South met during the Civil War. Antebellum homes proudly line the streets. It is divided into four historic districts listed on the National Registry.
It was at the Lexington Historic Site where Oliver Anderson's mansion was located. According to a brochure, it was once called, "the largest and best arranged dwelling house west of St. Louis". However, it is now remembered as the place of the "Battle of the Hemp Bales". This was a three-day war that took place from September 18-20, 1861. The battle was between the Union army and the Missouri State Guard in a Civil War. It was converted to a hospital for wounded soldiers from battle.
Visitors can see the damage done by cannons and artillery to this mansion in the building. I found that to be fascinating on my visit there.
The visitors center is a good place to start on this historical journey for it is there you will find displays and audio visual programs detailing the three-day war. After that take the tour with their knowledgeable guides who explain the events in understandable and simple terms.
The Lexington Historic Site is the setting for many "Living History" events on the premises that happen throughout the year. Check their website for more details. This museum is located at 1101 Delaware in Lexington, MO. The park office number is 660-259-4154. Hours are as follows: March through October they are open from 9 to 5 on Tuesday through Saturday and holiday Mondays and 10-6 on Sunday. Winter hours are from November through February from 9 to 3 Wednesday through Saturday and holiday Mondays and 10 to 5 on Sunday. Admission is free.
Taking a trip to Lexington will be time well spent. There's something to say about small-town living.
