Battles in Your Mind

For a Soldier

Catherine Garretson-Bilnoski
Again my head is brimming with
The question I need answered:
To where have you been going,
When the spark dims in your eyes?

Your countenance is showing
The dreams you fear to speak of.
To where have you been going,
In the visions in your mind?

I see your eyes gloss over
At the fears you can not speak of.
I know that you have fallen
Into a pit inside your mind.

I watch as your soul journeys
To a place I may not follow,
A place of death and heartbreak
In the battles of your Mind.

You will not let me follow,
You hope I will not find you,
For fear that they will harm me-
The shades that haunt your mind.

But there inside your darkness,
I know you hear me call you.
I'll help you through the shadows
That lurk inside your mind.

I know our love will triumph,
That the darkness is abating.
But I fear you'll struggle always
With the memories in your mind.

So in the darkness burning is
My love- A flame to guide you
Back into a place of comfort
Where I hold you in my arms.
