Battling Adult Acne: The Fight to Be Blemish Free

Lisa Miller
I have been battling this epidemic my entire life. When I finally reached adulthood, I thought I would have some relief, but no, it just grew worse. More and more red bumps popping up all over my face. Job interviews, dates, even dinner with friends were challenging. Most of my friends did not even have a pimple problem through high school, let alone as adults. I felt like everyone was constantly staring at these blemishes all over my face. It had an effect on my self esteem and how I viewed myself. I become more of a hermit, I did not even want to show my face in public anymore. It seemed like no matter what I tried, nothing would subside this terrible acne.

It seemed that through stress of adult life, and life in general had an effect on my face. In the past I had moderate to slight acne, but adulthood made it spring to full force, my face being a mecca for ugly red bumps. I tried everything, forked out money for a Dermatologist, expensive department store skin care lines, you name it. No relief. Or it would work for a month or two then rear its ugly head once again. Something had to give, I felt like I needed a miracle. I fell for all the rumored acne causing fibs, gave up eating chocolate or french fries, still with no luck. Everyone kept telling me it will run its course, and eventually my acne would go away for good. I felt like I was wasting my life away feeling terrible about myself and my face. Then one day, things finally changed.

I had talked to a co-worker about my acne, one day after she saw me piling on layers of concealer on my break. She had told me that she had the very same problem, even showed me pictures of her with a face full of red dots. She gave me a business card to a "Skin Care Professional" not just a Dermatologist. I figured it wouldn't work on me anyhow, but I paid her a visit anyway. To my surprise, she was understanding, genuine and compassionate about my situation. She uncovered several myths first hand, that stress does not always cause acne, that eating french fries and chocolate don't either. Also washing your face a million times a day and slathering on acne cream still will not prevent or diminish the effects. She told me to go lightly on the makeup, that odds are I was just continually clogging my pores. Also, that my acne may have been hereditary, my other family members were also suffering from adult acne as well. The biggest tip she gave me was something very simple. It was to increase my water intake by simply drinking eight glasses a day. She also told me to eat fruits and vegetables, that the antioxidant factors sometimes helped.

I thought at first that she was as far off as could be. What does drinking water have to do with my skin? And fruits and vegetables, no way that works. I started eating better and drinking up, figured I might as well give it a shot. I also washed my face twice a day with a mild medicated cleanser like Noxema. To my surprise, about two weeks later I noticed a huge difference. My complexion seemed brighter, my face was not as oily. Most of all, my blemishes were diminishing, and no new ones were popping up. It worked, and improved my skin all around. I would definitely recommend this method to anyone with adult acne.

Also, I read in several magazine that the use of Tea Tree Oil helps blemishes. It has many factors that promote healing. I purchased a Tea Tree acne product on line, and started using it right away. It was easy to use, just roll it on your skin in the morning and at night. It felt tingly and clean, and also helped my complexion. The blemishes were going away, and eventually I had a fresh new face. You can purchase Tea Tree products in a health foods stores, vitamin retailer such as GNC, or on line. They definitely work.

These are just a few simple steps to help relieve adult acne. To this day, I still eat right and use Tea Tree Oil for my skin. It has continued working for me, and will hopefully help you too. Adult acne is definitely a terrible condition to have. Hopefully I have helped point you in the right direction for treatment.
