Battling Obesity: Proper Nutrition and Eating

Obesity is typically attributed to poor eating habits and improper amounts of physical activity. This does not apply to everyone. However, if you fall into this broad category here are some common sense, practical steps to take.

So, how does one go about losing weight and keeping it off? In this installment we will be looking at sensible eating. It is no surprise diets simply do not work for most people. After all, the first three letters in the word diet spell die, which is exactly what you are doing to your body.

Healthier Food Choices

In an ever growing fast food society, it is alarming the rise in obesity and obesity-related conditions. Everyone it seems wants instant gratification, especially when time is crunched. Taking a step back and looking at the food choices you make can be a huge step in making healthier food choices.

Keep in mind the five principles of sensible eating, which form the acronym ABCMV:

Adequacy

We need to make sure we are eating enough and there are several popular formulas for figure out how many calories we should be consuming on a daily basis. The formula will calculate the calories to maintain your current weight, but following the 50/50 method of weight control, we can determine the caloric intake to either gain or loss weight.

Balance

Balance is taking a look at the five main food groups and using it as a guide to work with ones weight. Additionally, balance can be extended outward to include the mental, emotional and spiritual aspects of oneself. It is no secret that being out of balance emotionally for instance can cause one to have a difficult time losing weight and even cause unhealthy weight gain.

Calorie

Not trying to make anyone a calorie freak, counting every single calorie as some do. Being more aware of the amount of calories one is putting in their body can be helpful. Far too often the nutrition label, which contain valuable information, is neglected. Nutrition labels contain far more than the amount of calories. Also take a look at the list of ingredients.

Moderation

Not everything a person consumes is good for them. Some items, such as alcohol, are generally accepted as being "good in moderation." Just remember that too much of something is not necessarily a good thing.

Variety

Variety is often seen as the spice of life. Make it a spice of eating as well. Eating the same things all the time might not seem bad or even necessarily be bad. Try to add some variety into your eating, as much as you possibly can. Just be aware of what you can eat.
