Batwoman - Lesbian Hero

Kathy Kane Steps Out of the Closet

Batwoman is making a come back in a huge way. Not only is she going to help defend Gotham City from evil -doing, scum bag criminals, but she is also going to be shoving the lesbian movement in the face of those who seek to stomp on the rights of same sex couples who will (expectedly) be rallying behind her.

Comic book enthusiasts are aware that a gay superhero is nothing new in spite of how shocked so many people seem to be by Batwoman's "outing." The news of The Rawhide Kid being a successful gay comic book character wasn't even hinted at by the media when he was outted. Unlike the outrage over Batwoman being a lesbian.

It is my humble opinion that the issue is no longer about Batwoman the character anymore, but rather about an individual's stance on gay issues. At this point Batwoman could be a 4 legged child abductor and no one would notice anything except for her appetite for the ladies.

DC Comic's message boards have been lit up, some posters for and some posters against Batwoman being a lesbian. Some consumers participating in the DC forums have threatened to boycott for no other reason than they sit on the opposing side of gays and lesbians. Flaming amongst the posters has elicited a war that reminds this writer of the Civil War.

A religious, politically correct - or incorrect as the case may be - war in which a united people are divided by blinding, impenetrable morals. A selfish war in which either side can't see the forest for the trees. But such is the way of war and such will be the way the whole Batwoman scenario plays out.

Kathy Kane is set to debut as Batwoman in the DC Comic titled "52" in July 2009. DC Comics VP Dan Dido has described her as "a lesbian socialite by night and a crime-fighter by later in the night " to the Associated Press.

When Batwoman makes its arrival Kathy Kane shows up in painted on leather, stiletto boots, flaming red hair and a wicked temper - which she takes out on her ex-girlfriend with a punch to snout.

Batwoman was first outed in a Batman comic by writer Greg Rucka when he penciled her alter ego in to dating a Gotham City Detective, Renee Montoya. Consequently that was also the very first time Batwoman made the headlines on her own merit.

There has been speculation that the lesbian aspect of Kathy Kane aka Batwoman may lead to an innapropriate trend in teens who see her as a role model. It has yet to be said whether these speculations are coming from the general public or if they are just the rumblings of media hype.

At the moment, Batwoman is the most talked about topic on blogs. Much ado about nothing some would argue. We will have to wait and see how much Batwoman will be able to help the gay movement. Regardless she's bound to be one kick ass superhero that even I might consider watching on the big screen.

Do some better research next time. This was an issue a few years ago, its nothing new. "52" was a weekly comic published by DC Comics in 2006, where she appeared in issue #9. It was leaked before then that the new Batwoman was lesbian. So your about 3 years late on your article. Batwoman is taking over DC Comics "Detective Comics" run in June 2009 as well.

    Simply said, "Who Cares"!

    Batwoman rocks.

No, this is not good. A minor character in terms of the pantheon of super heroes, but none the less, it is not a good idea for the Woman representative of the "Bat" family to be portrayed as a lesbian. An important decision that was botched on this one.

It's always good when a butt-kicking chick gets some media attention, even if she is a fictional superhero ;-)

    Good job done here.

I agree with CJ. The whole thing should be a non-issue by now.

We need more superheros in our world no matter their sexual orientation.

  • Carol Bengle Gilbert2/14/2009

It's ridiculous that the sexual orientation of a superhero is either an issue or in the limelight. Aren't superheros busy enough fighting crime?
