Baymont Inns & Suites in Stevensville/St. Joseph, Michigan

A Basic Lodging Choice in Southwestern Michigan

In the past, we've stayed at Baymont frequently because of the good value. We were not impressed with this property in Stevensville. When we were there in August 2005, the outside of the hotel showed a bit of neglect: panels were hanging off the bottom of the sign and the illuminated letters on the side of the hotel boasted that it's the Bay…t Inns & Suites.

This Baymont is located right off I-94 in Stevensville, Michigan; it's easy to find. There is plenty of parking in front and back, and pets are welcome. There are many food options close by. Within walking distance are Popeye's Chicken & Biscuits, Cracker Barrel, and Long John Silvers. Across the street is a Big Boy Restaurant and McDonald's. A bit up the road are Culver's, Dairy Queen, BP/Amoco Gas Station, and a Shell Gas Station. There is not much as far as activity in this part of town. And there are no lake views at this hotel; it's one mile away. Be prepared to drive or stay somewhere else if you want something to do.

We booked a one-room suite with a King bed and queen sofa bed, desk, recliner, and TV. The sink is in an alcove right as you walk in the door. There are plenty of mirrors and the sink area was well-lit. The bathroom had a bathtub/shower combination. The room itself was spacious; the bathroom was not. We also had a coffee-maker, mini-fridge and a small microwave.

The bed was uncomfortable and the sheets were thin and didn't fit the bed well; the fitted sheet kept slipping off the corners. The room was humid, even after running the air conditioning constantly, which probably meant the unit wasn't powerful enough for the size of the room. It was also difficult to control the temperature of the shower; it would change from hot to cool to cold and back again constantly. Not a lot of detail was paid as far as housekeeping was concerned. The shower curtain in our room was dirty, the bottom of the tub was stained, and there was garbage in one of the nightstands.

There is no pool or whirlpool at this hotel. It does offer free passes to a local gym. The free continental breakfast is served in a tiny alcove with about six tables. We went down one day and didn't go back. The space was just too small for the amount of people trying to serve themselves. They do have cereal in packages that can be used as bowls, so if you want something but don't want to deal with the wait, you can grab a couple of those and a glass of milk and take it back to your room.

We've stayed in plenty of Baymonts nicer than this one. It's definitely not their best property. But, if you're just looking for a place to sleep and aren't too picky, you might find a good deal here. If you plan on spending a considerable amount of time in your room, I suggest checking out one of the newer hotels in the area - Candlewood Suites or Comfort Suites.

Tosi's Restaurant is an excellent local Italian place just minutes from the hotel. Their pastries are made by the Bit O Swiss bakery, which shares landspace with the restaurant. A must if you're in the area.
