Most developers agree that the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 have about the same amount of power. However, both high-definition video game systems have dramatically different architecture. Microsoft built the Xbox 360 to be developer friendly. Sony, on the other hand, decided to build the Playstation 3 around the latest technological chipset, the Cell Architecture. Because developers have no experience with the new chipset, developing games on the Playstation 3 proved to be difficult.
As a result, almost every multiplatform game that appears on the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 ended up favoring the Xbox 360 visually. Seeing this widespread issue, Sony quickly helped ease the development for Playstation 3 games by improving software tools and directly assisting developers. Due to their efforts, the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of multiplatform games have minimal differences.
Bayonetta would be a good test for the Playstation 3. The upcoming multiplatform game comes from the mind of Hideki Kamiya, who was previously responsible for one of the most innovative action games ever in Devil May Cry. In fact, Bayonetta is basically a more evolved form of Devil May Cry with even more wacky and stylish moves.
The upcoming action title runs at a smooth 60 frames per second and will stay consistent throughout the adventure. This is important because an action game focused on combat requires expert precision and timing. An inconsistent frame rate on the Playstation 3 and/or Xbox 360 could ruin the experience.
Only the Xbox 360 version has been shown to the public so far and developer Platinum Games has been mute on the Playstation 3 iteration. This led many to believe that the Xbox 360 may be the lead platform for development and that the game will be ported to the Playstation 3. A multiplatform game of this description usually spells trouble for the Playstation 3 version.
However, Platinum Games is ensuring the Playstation 3 fan base that both versions of Bayonetta will look identical in the end. In order for the action game to sell, Platinum Games need the Playstation 3 version to perform well. This is because the install base of the Playstation 3 in Japan is significantly bigger than the Xbox 360. Not to mention that the system takes up around 40% of the high-definition market.
Thus, it is very important for Bayonetta to look the same on the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 when it launches early next year.
