BBC Back Reporting on Iran Election Revolt After Equipment Confiscated

BBC Back Reporting on Iran Election Revolt After Equipment Confiscated

Deborah Oakes, NPS
BBC is back on YouTube, Sunday, June 14, 2:59 PM, CST. Video is recorded 12 hours after the Iran election. According to the BBC reporter, they have to be careful now in broadcasting as their equipment was confiscated. This clip is a montage of several hours of protests.

It shows night protests with streets crowded with people. The video then goes to day protests with people crowding streets. A secret policeman tried to stop the reporter and people ran him off so he could continue.

So far, this is the only video from the BBC known of since Saturday evening. Huffington Post reports BBC has been told to get out of Iran immediately. The two biggest German TV stations said on their main news tonight that they were not allowed to report anymore.

Another Tweet says Ahmadinejad's website has been shut down by hackers.

ABC's Lara Setrakian on Twitter says: "Rezaei, the conservative candidate and fmr head of Revolutionary Guards, apparently publishes open letter strongly contesting iran election."
Another Tweet: An informed Iranian-American tells me, "If the former head of Revolutionary Guards is saying it's illegitimate, it's definitely a crack in the armor because even if he's not in, his former staff are still there."
An earlier Tweet reported that 120 professors from Sharif University quit in protest of the Iran elections. It is also reported police have arrested approximately 15 reformist leaders, dragging some of them out of their homes in the middle of the night.

Here is a copy/paste of a Tweet from an Iranian-American:

Just got off the phone with my dad. He leaves in northern tehran...

He said that most iranians believe that a lot of the basijis [plain clothes officers] on the bikes are hezbollah arabs brought in to do to the citizens what a persian cop would refuse to do. Accordingly when the protesters knock one of the basijis off their bikes they are being particularly brutal, believing that the rider is arab. Regular uninformed cops are not being pursued with the same anger.
Bank storefronts have been smashed all over northern tehran. Mousavi, khattami and rafsanjani are allegedly meeting at mousavi's house (who is under house arrest) and are planning their next move. People there are waiting for further instructions from mousavi. In my dads neighborhood bbc persia and voice of america have been knocked off the satellite but not in all parts. Sorry this is rambling I'm getting constant calls from tehran. Will speak to my father again in two hours and will let you know anything new.
Please do not mention my name if you blog about this. Thanks.

What is happening during the Iranian rebellion is information is sporadic and may be cut off at any time. Twitter and YouTube reports continue off and on even after the Iranian government began jamming communications. No major networks seem to be picking up the story at this time. Tweets come fast and Huffington Post has a live feed to them.

Great info! It makes me mad that this is not getting as much coverage as it deserves. It was a sham election and I applaud the Iranian people for rising up against an oppressive regime. I hate the bloodshed that will take place though.
