BB&T Ballpark Review

Home of the Winston-Salem Dash

David Funk
Back on Friday, July 2, I attended BB&T Ballpark to watch the Winston-Salem Dash host the Potomac Nationals. This was the day after I arrived back for a four-day weekend from working in Boston. It was night game with fireworks for the fans to celebrate 4th of July.

The ballpark opened up in April 2010 which was coincidentally enough against the same Potomac team as over 7,000 were on hand for that one. The ballpark has a 15-year naming rights deal with the North Carolina-based BB&T(Branch Banking & Trust) Corporation which is who I bank with, too. It replaced Ernie Shore Field as their new home in 2010.

The Dash won this game 4-2 as shortstop Eduardo Escobar had three hits and two runs scored for Winston-Salem. The Nationals only had three hits in the game while the Dash had 12. The Nationals had a 1-0 lead until Winston-Salem got its offense going with three runs in the bottom of the 6th inning.

The July 2 game set a record for attendance as 7,268 fans were on hand for this game and the great fireworks display that followed, too. It was a great night for baseball.

My Review of BB&T Ballpark

The bad: During night games, it can be very tough to drive to the stadium for those 7pm games since it is located off of Business I-40. The typical 5pm traffic can make you late for the game if you don't give yourself enough time to make it. If you get there late and have tickets for the lawn area, you may not have a space to sit there during promotional games such as this. Their fan shop is rather small, but the prices are reasonable for what they do have.

The good: The ballpark is easily spotted off of Business I-40, and to find the exit you need to take to park. Though it is a minor league park, it is one of the nicest ones you'll find to watch a baseball game at. The ticket prices for a new park are excellent which was $7 for lawn seating. It was only $12 total for the online order I made, and it was free for a will call pickup.

Overall: For a brand new ballpark, the ticket prices are excellent. Once you find your way to Business I-40, the park is very easily spotted which makes it virtually impossible to get lost. Just be sure not to get stuck in traffic during those weekly night games, and the experience of game is great for all fan types and families to enjoy. If you're in the Greensboro/Winston-Salem area, or Triad of North Carolina, this is good place to go during the summer months or baseball season.

BB&T Ballpark replaced Ernie Shore Field as Winston-Salem's new minor league baseball facility. Ernie Shore Field opened in 1956 and is the home of the Wake Forest baseball team.
