BC3 - A Look at the New College

Mark Mielke
College is a very important time in a young person's life. It not only provides them with a higher level of education, it gives them a very unique experience, the college experience. This is often described as the best time of a person's life. It helps them make the transition from youth to adulthood and it makes the whole process easier. Most colleges are quite expensive, but usually considered worth the experience. Now there is a new college that offers the same classes at less than half the price. This college is called Butler County Community College (or BC3 for short). But even through the low prices of their classes, can BC3 provide a normal college experience?

Some critics claim that the educational standards at BC3 are not in very good quality, since they offer their curriculum at such low prices. They say that degrees and certificates earned at BC3 are worth as much or aren't as good as the same kind of degree earned at a more expensive college. However, the state of Pennsylvania has given BC3 the same approval that they give their other colleges in regards to educational standards. Statistically, a degree earned at BC3 would be worth just as much as a degree earned at a regular college. The same applies to certificates, extracurricular activities, and internship programs.

A great deal of people say that BC3 cannot offer a regular college experience because it has no campus. Did I forget to mention that? BC3 has no campus. Enrolled students proceed directly to a building owned by the school for their classes then go back to their own homes. You cannot live in a dorm with BC3. You cannot hold BC3 parties. You cannot live with BC3. Many people say that half of college is dorm life, dorm parties, and just living on campus in general. Sure, the classes' prices are lowered but is it worth the cost in social life skills?

In the end, it comes down to a question of what you would be willing to sacrifice for your wants and needs. If you choose to go to a regular college, then you sacrifice a great deal of money but you may gain a valuable, life changing experience of the college life. If you choose BC3, then you may be sacrificing a unique experience of regular college life in exchange for saving a lot of extra money. Every person is different, so everyone will have their own opinions on this topic. I am merely the informer. Choose as you will.
