BCS Championship Game vs. College Football Playoffs: What's a Mother to Do?
The Parity is Here to Stay, the Big House is Just Another House, "Tradition" Be Darned
This was NOT just a "wacky" season. The reality is that there is a parity now, like never before. And it isn't going to go away. Why? How did The Big House get to be just another house? What happened to Nebraska? Oklahoma can't win a bowl game? Ohio State: always a bridesmaid, never a bride? What in the world is going on?
Here's what Mama thinks: Television deals have meant big money to lots of programs. They have upgraded their facilities, upgraded their coaching staffs, and doners have stepped up. Recruiting is a hard business, and many more programs have lots to offer. Ironically, the Bowl games have a hand in this, so in a way, they've created a monster.
Second point: Former and current NFL players do not necessarily send their sons to their alma mater, and that speaks volumes and grossly interrupts the "Tradition" gravy train. Just to mention a few: Archie Manning. He was more loyal to the coaching staff than the school. Peyton played at Tennesee in part because of coaching staff. Eli went to Ole Miss (Archie's alma mater) because of coaching. Howie Long went to Villanova; his son plays at Virginia. Terry Robiskie went to LSU, his son plays for the Buckeyes. Clay Matthews and Mario Cellotto both played at USC, but sent their sons to Oregon. Willie Harper went to Nebraska; his son Matthew is also at Oregon. Gill Byrd sent his son Gill Jr. to New Mexico State and his other son Jairus to Oregon. I rest my case. Why? Mama thinks that these men know there is life after football, and want a good education and college experience, as well as playing to their sons' talents.
And then there's playing time. If you are a fleet-footed quarterback and can throw the ball well, of course you're going to want to play in programs that exploit your skills. So a traditional smash 'em up and grind it out program won't meet your needs. And here's a newsflash: it's just not as exciting as the run and gun programs or those who at least mix it up. And guess what? That kind of program sells on television.
So what to do? If we had a playoff system, most doubts would be solved. Mama says USC beats LSU. West Virginia....did they deserve another crack at it? Mama votes for some kind of playoff system or at the very least somehow tweak the BCS, because you can no longer rely on strength of schedule or what teams did 5 years ago.
