I, as did many others, subjected myself to the poor display that was the BCS national title game on Monday night. The fact alone that a two loss team in LSU made it into this game and went onto win should be a clear indicator that the bowl system in all of its dinosaur aged glory should be discontinued. College presidents all across the country should have the guts to put financial interests aside for the benefit of the sport that they so apparently love and support so well. Only they and their unparalleled power in this sport can bring about the change that is desperately needed to produce a true national champion.
The Ohio State Buckeyes have become the Buffalo Bills of college football. Make it to the ultimate game and choke under the pressure. I will give the BCS this much credit. The 2006 Rose Bowl between USC and Texas was the only national championship game in the eleven year history of this system to produce a real national championship. Two such powerhouses no longer exist in college football. Parity is now the rule, no longer the exception. The BCS committee needs to recognize this trend and at least set up a playoff bracket that will reflect said trend.
As for conference affiliation, this should now be irrelevant. The Big Ten, SEC, ACC, Big 12, and PAC 10 should no longer get free passes. They should earn their way into a prospective tournament. The BCS should open the doors to all conferences within the bowl subdivision, not just the ones with the deepest pockets.
Imagine if the NFL decided to automatically place the New England Patriots into the Super Bowl without playing a single playoff game. That is what this current system is the equivalent of. Based on regular season merit, not the rigors and unexpected that a playoff holds.
The NCAA should save the media and fans alike the ammunition and put the BCS out of its misery once and for all.
