BCS Standings for Week 2 Have Shakeups Below Top 3

Robert Dougherty
The BCS standings in week 2 are out, with the top 3 staying the same. But the BCS standings for week 2 have changes everywhere else. The BCS week 2 standings can only move around the teams below Florida, Texas and Alabama, as they jockey for position in case the top 3 lose someday. For the BCS standings in week 2, none of the major challengers lost, but some made a big move up while others went down.

The BCS week 2 standings have Florida, Alabama and Texas 1-2-3. But it is now the Iowa Hawkeyes who are number 4, poised to get in the BCS title game in case someone slips up.

The Hawkeyes could have been ruined last night, as they needed a touchdown on the final play to beat Michigan State. But despite Iowa's near defeat - and their close wins against some inferior opponents early in the year - the Hawkeyes lead the challengers in the BCS standings for week 2.

Boise State was number 4 in the BCS standings, but they finally dropped three spots to seventh. The Broncos didn't lose, but their poor schedule has finally caught up to them. Worse yet, now TCU is the highest ranked mid-major in the BCS standings, as the Horned Frogs' destruction of BYU jumped them up to sixth, with USC at fifth.

The BCS standings in week 2 moved USC up from their surprising seventh place status last week, despite a narrow win against Oregon State. If the Trojans beat 10'th ranked Oregon in a Halloween showdown this week, the Trojans will likely move up even further. Iowa, TCU, Boise State and Cincinnati have surprised everyone by staying in the top 10 - but USC is the one traditional power among them, and the one expected to stay standing in December.

Though the BCS week 2 standings are relatively calm, things could have been chaotic if Alabama hadn't survived Tennessee. This week, Texas will be under the upset spotlight as they visit Oklahoma State on Saturday night. The next week, Alabama will have their own major test in hosting ninth-ranked LSU.

Florida, Alabama and Texas still rule the BCS standings, though they have all survived surprising scares lately. Things would be nice and orderly if they stayed undefeated into December - but if one of them loses, which challenger would step in to play for a national championship? With the changes below the top 3, it could still be anyone.

But for the moment, it is Iowa leading the next pack of BCS contenders, although USC could vault over them with a convincing win at Oregon, and likely stay there.
