BCS : Will Congress Subject Them to Anti Trust Legislation?

The BCS System Stinks of Impropriety when You Look at the Bowl Match Ups

Todd Jacobs
Here we are again. Another BCS Bowl match up mess. Look at this years top BCS games and just attempt to explain them. This new "revamped system" is a bigger joke than the old system. Wasn't this system made to give number one vs number 2 and number 3 vs number 4 and so on? It appears they just manipulated the match ups to their own best interests. I'm not sure but shouldn't the BCS be subject to an investigation if it does appear illegitimate. There is a lot of money involved.

Four problems with this years final BCS rankings:

1) Explain how Cincinnati leapfrogs over TCU on the last weekend. Then goes on to play the Florida Gators coming off their crushing loss to Alabama. See story here.

2) Explain Texas after that ridiculously poor performance against number 22 Nebraska Cornhuskers. Texas after that game moved up to number 2? If Cincinnati's performance was so incredible, why didn't they vault past Texas also. After all Cincinnati beat a BCS ranked team. Pittsburgh was ranked number 9 in the BCS. See story here.

3) The FedEx Orange Bowl has a joke of a match up once again. Georgia Tech vs Iowa. Seriously? Embarrassing.

4) Even more embarrassing is the Fiesta Bowl. The BCS cannot deny they legitimately came up with that match up. Boise State vs TCU is the match up for one reason. The BCS doesn't want their "clients to face better teams that may upset them.

BCS is beholden to the major conferences

The point is the system is run by the schools and not independent. BCS officials can say all day long they are independent but the proof is in the pudding. When the President of the United States even proclaims we need a playoff system for college football isn't it time to scrap this joke of a system and create and 8-16 team playoff format?

Look no further than the excitement generated by the lower football divisions and their playoffs. The games are not only exciting but generate great television. Also for a barometer of how well a playoff system will do just look at college basketball. They have incredible ratings during the 65 player NCAA Championship Tournament.

Championship Week is a preview of the excitement a playoff system can generate

A preview of what a college football playoff could generate is last weekends Championship Week. Most games were incredible. Highlighted by the Cincinnati-Pittsburgh tilt. Texas vs Nebraska had it's share of drama also. Some amazing Heisman worthy performances were showcased in most of the games also. See story here.

BCS 8 or 16 team playoff would produce huge rating numbers and huge dollars for colleges.

It is understood a 8 or 16 team playoff system will still leave two or three teams with a beef. The main thing this will accomplish is a true national champion. Unlike the current BCS system which generates mass confusion. Currently there are 33 bowl games with 66 teams. Some bowls can remain. The teams that aren't in the top 8 or 16 teams will still have bowl games. The revenue for the remaining bowls that host playoffs will double their income with the increased interest. The NCAA will increase their revenue with the bidding war that will surely ensue.

This year it appears, more than any other year that the NCAA and the BCS just doesn't understand what their public wants. The contracts with these bowls can become much more valuable with a semi final or quarter final game. It will take one year to discover that the public will drive the sales of merchandise and ticket sales at the bowl games.
