Be Aware of Value Sizes: Today's Example - Instant Mashed Potatoes

Shopping Savvy

To follow is another example of why we need to be ever diligent when we shop.

I was looking for a large box of instant mashed potatoes and I saw one particular brand had two different shaped containers. One was a cylindrical canister and the other was a box. At first glance the canister looked bigger. Here are the actual sizes.

The canister: 28 oz

The box: 26.2 oz

Ok, no big deal. The canister is actually slightly larger than the box, but how do the prices compare?

The canister: $6.19

The box: $3.77

Yup, that's right! If you buy the canister you pay $2.42 for an extra 1.8 ounces. Completely not worth it!

I should point out one thing on behalf of the product manufacturer and that is the box was clearly labeled "New Value Size", which implies that the box was a new offering. If that is the case then the manufacturer may be in the process of phasing out the canister and switching to the box.
