When using a prepaid credit card you cannot spend above the amount you are allotted with your prepayment. Since you pay ahead, in full, you set your budget restrictions. You cannot be penalized with high interest rates for carrying forward a balance, since there is no balance to carry forward. There are no penalties for late payment or overcharging.
However, some difficulties do present themselves with the use of such cards. It is wise to familiarize yourself with them before you begin using your prepaid credit card.
•Certain fees can be applicable to prepaid credit cards. There might be an annual fee, a fee for loading the card, and a fee to maintain the card. Compare cards and fees before deciding on which card to use in order to determine what is most beneficial to your circumstance.
•Always know the balance of the card before making a purchase. If you don't have enough money on the card, you will be asked to make up the difference in cash. You usually can keep track of your balance online.
•Be cautious while shopping online. If someone tricks you out of the money on your card, it can prove very difficult to get it back. The money is a direct deposit straight out of your credit card account. It is immediate and usually unrecoverable.
•Merchants can abuse prepaid credit cards. Some unscrupulous merchants have been known to overcharge prepaid cards. So be careful where and when you use your prepaid credit card. It is recommended to use cash for small purchases.
•Such cards cannot be used at ATMs; they are strictly reserved for making purchases. They can never be used to obtain cash.
•Monthly subscriptions and prearranged payment to services like Netflix or your television cable company cannot be done on such cards.
Even with their limitations, prepaid credit cards are a terrific option for many people. Offering the overall convenience of a traditional credit card with the security of a prepaid spending limit, these cards offer the right blend of ease and confidence necessary to many of today's consumers.
