Drop Your Chores, and Hit the Shores! It's Time for the 11th Annual Santa Monica Lei-Out Beach Ultimate!

On Saturday and Sunday, January 16-17, Santa Monica Beach will play host to the 11th annual Lei-Out Beach Ultimate, the largest, most competitive Ultimate Frisbee tournament in the country. With 100 5-man teams competing in the two-day event, the Lei-Out Beach Ultimate is sure to be full of spills, chills, and thrills for the whole family!

This year's Ultimate event, the Lei-Out, will take place on the north side of Santa Monica Pier. There will be concessions and vendors and plenty of room for the family to bring blankets and spread out on the warm Southern California sands. Beach Ultimate Frisbee is very exciting, fun, and full of awesome shows of athleticism. Santa Monica Beach will be the place to be this weekend!

While the weather in Santa Monica is predicted to be arguably perfect for the Lei-Out Beach Ultimate on Saturday with a high around 70, sunny and clear, Sunday the weather will be turning, so if you can't bear to miss the final moments of competition, bring a windbreaker. The wind is predicted to kick up a little in the afternoon and it will likely be cloudy. Then again, wind definitely plays a factor in Ultimate, so it might make for some very interesting games.

Ultimate Frisbee has been around, more or less officially, since approximately 1968, when a group of college students organized teams and competitions with rules similar to Frisbee football, with each team trying to "score" by getting the Frisbee across the opposing team's goal line. While the rules are strictly adhered to and considered official, the game is self officiated, though there are observers designated to offer an opinion if directly appealed to from either team. Ultimate rules include a high degree of personal conduct and while fouls do occur, professionals of the sport maintain very sportsmanlike ethics. According to Wikipedia, "A foul was defined as contact 'sufficient to arouse the ire of the player fouled.'"

While the Lei-Out Beach Ultimate tournament is not officially sanctioned by the Ultimate Players Association (UPA), which is the official national governing body of the sport, UPA's website does list the event in its calendar of tournament events. The website states that this is done on the discretion of UPA for events that UPA feels are in keeping with the mission of the organization.

The Santa Monica Lei-Out Beach Ultimate tournament begins at 10:00 a.m. both days and wraps up for the day at approximately 5:00 in the afternoon. If you don't have any pressing plans for the weekend, and maybe even if you do, come to Santa Monica Beach and enjoy a day watching a great sport that is sure to have you roaring in excitement as you watch your newly adopted team make that final, last minute save to win the game!

Frisbee is the trademark name of the Wham-O company and is not officially used by the Ultimate sport organization. Its use in this article is solely for the purpose of the reader's familiarity with the name.

It is indeed a coed event, Guest, making the term "5-man team" a little politically incorrect. I'm not sure I agree that "we all" is entirely accurate in describing those who know that Frisbee is the actual trademark. It has become such a common term that I'm sure there are many people, old and young, who know that it's a thrown plastic disk. My understanding is that Ultimate players rarely use Frisbees, preferring more modern and sophisticated disks. Nonetheless, your suggestions are well received and appreciated. I have a long way to go to becoming an entirely professional writer, so I appreciate good constructive criticism!

It's a coed tournament and not accurate to say there are "5 man" teams. Also, we all know that "Frisbee" is a trademark and you'd be better served in syndicating your content if you used the term more appropriately. What are the rules for frisbee football?
