Beachcomber's Winnipeg: A Restaurant Review

Formerly Known as Branigan's

Laurie Meekis
Beachcomber's in Winnipeg, formerly known as Branigan's, is located right on the river front next to the Red River and the Assiniboine River. Beachcombers is situated in the ever popular local and tourist spot known as The Forks. The setting alone makes for an enjoyable lunch or dinner outing. It feels like an escape from the congested city.

Beachcomber's in Winnipeg has three very pleasant seating options, depending on your personal preference. There is an indoor, somewhat more formal dining room, complete with an open fireplace for colder weather. They have a festive and colourful sunroom area set up next to the bar with booths, tables and bright window seating. The final eating option is an outdoor patio area, set up with café style tables and umbrellas. From the inside window areas and outside are views of the historic Forks and the adjoining river. All three areas are equally enjoyable. When warmer weather is available, many people like to take advantage of the sunshine and fresh air of the outdoor patio area. The views are interesting.

The servers at Beachcomber's are very pleasant and helpful. We have been there many times and each time have been had prompt attention, and polite, attentive service. We have found the waitresses to be very friendly and welcoming, making the diner feel wanted and at home right away. They seem to enjoy what they are doing. We have one or two favourite waitresses and sometimes will ask for seating in their service section, if we know they are there. Even when they are quite busy, service has been great.

We had not been to Beachcomber's in months and were looking forward to a relaxed and pleasant lunch outing on a sunny day. We were very pleased when we found one of our favourite waitresses, named Mary, still working there. When she came to take our orders, she remembered precisely what my husband's favourite meal at Beachcomber's is. She greeted us and asked him if he wanted the chicken fingers to begin and the full plate of ribs for his meal. With all the customers Beachcomber's gets, we were completely astonished that she remembered exactly what he liked, right down to the glass of beer. I tend to try different meals each time and she knew that too. Now that is attentive service.

The food is very good and some of the menu items do change. They have a nice variety of choices for all palates. Beachcomber's offers seafood, steak, ribs and a tasty and interesting assortment of creative sandwiches and meals. Care is taken in the preparation and presentation of each item. I have tried many dishes ranging from pasta or rib plates to seafood, salads and dessert. I have not been disappointed with any of my choices.

Prices range from individual appetizers starting around six dollars to meals at about twenty six dollars. They also have a full bar.

Beachcomber's does suggest you call ahead for a reservation, but we never have and have been seated quickly. There are busier times though, which may require a reservation. Call ahead to find out. Do be aware that hours of operation vary according to season, with extended hours in warmer weather.

We look forward to our next outing to Beachcomber's at The Forks in Winnipeg.

My husband & I had a very terrible experience @ this restaurant. The service was very terrible! Our server was not friendly @ all. She was very ignorant. My husband had ordered a side order of mushrooms with his supper & that was forgotten. The couple who came in after us were served before us. By the time we got our order, the meat was very dry & not appealing to eat. Very poor service! Never returning to that place!!!! Terrible, terrible service~~

SERIOUSLY!! I wish I would have read these comments before going in!! It would have saved me a horrible evening!!

My husband and I went in not having been there before and thought this would be a nice place for dinner on our monthly date night..MISTAKE!! First we were treated as thou we were intruding on the servers gab fest..
We were seated and our server asks for our drink order...after my having to ask what the special was for the evening..which was answered with a sigh..we ordered adult drinks (not the special) and off she went.
Drinks are delivered and our order taken...app and meal both...
You guessed it both were delivered to our table at the same time!!!
We were asked if we needed anything else and yes I would like a water....OH you bet this is where the wet all over comes in...instead of walking around the table to place the water down she reaches across and SPILLS the whole glass of water on me!!! Sorrys are spoken, and a towel is produced..but this isn't the server we

Someone slap me....I went twice. The first time I ordered Steak Oscar (frozen not fresh, minimal topping). I like rare so the meat was thick to spite requesting the meat wasn't. Debris from the ceeling fell on our table/food, and as stated in a previous review, we were offered desert (to share/frozen mousse). I was shocked...$25 meal Salisbury makes a better steak!! 2nd time I had Chicken Nova Scotia; chicken breast stuffed with shrimp, pollock, (imitation) crab meat (pollock lol). Rice mixed in with veggies, piece of chicken in my poorly mixed tiny Ceasar salad. Fruit flies near the bar where you pay for food (dirty kitchen). The manager made excuses, was unapologetic, and gave us 10% off the bill after sitting there for 10min waiting for her to go in the kitchen and give us excuses. Spaghetti Factory is much better and that doesn't say much. Save your money eat in the food court!!!!! Most reviews for this place are negative...BEWARE!!

I'm aboriginal, so that covers the racial thing. I've eaten there and loved the service, never had a problem with who gets served first. all in all.... I've always had an enjoyable dining experience there... always have.

Very racist place apparently, they would not serve my friends of color! I don't recommend it! In fact the restaurant should be boycotted for this unacceptable behaviour!

Good for folks traveling to that area. Nice to find a good eatery in the area.
