Beaches of Southern New Jersey
Ocean City
Ocean City offers eight miles of beautiful beaches. It is known as "America's Greatest Family Resort." Ocean City caters to families with young children. It has 2.5 miles of boardwalk that includes dining, small shops, two amusement parks, a waterpark, rides and arcade games. The beaches are clean but are crowded during the peak season from late June to early September. Beach tags are required or all persons 12 years of age and up and range from $10 a week to $20 for the season. Ocean City is famous for its annual "Nights in Venice" boat parade.
Cape May
Cape May is at the southernmost tip of New Jersey. It has 2.8 miles of beaches. It is known for its Victorian architecture and its numerous bed-and-breakfast establishments. Beachgoers often find "Cape May Diamonds" on area beaches, which are clear quartz pebbles that wash down from the Delaware River. Collecting these is a popular pastime, and many shops sell them polished or as faceted stones. Cape May is also home to the Cape May-Lewes Ferry, which is a ferry that provides transportation to Lewes, Delaware.
Atlantic City is known for its free beaches and all of the activities that you can participate in on the beaches. It offers surfing, kayaking, windsurfing, and beach volleyball, among other things. It is also very popular for its bars. Atlantic City beaches are just steps from the casinos, so many resorts have bars directly on the beach. This makes Atlantic City popular with a young, trendy crowd.
Wildwood
Wildwood is also known for its free beaches and many activities for young and old alike. Wildwood beaches have been voted some of the best in the country and Wildwood hosts volleyball tournaments, motocross races, concerts and the Wildwoods International Kite Festival, among other events. The boardwalk stretches for miles and provides a nostalgic, carnival-like atmosphere.
