Beachy Things to Do in Los Angeles

Guide to Los Angeles Beaches

Stephanie Mojica
There are many things to do in Los Angeles, whether it is looking for or at celebrities, fine dining, driving around and looking at skyscrapers and beaches, or visiting one of the city's many museums. But no trip to Southern California is complete without visiting one or more of the beautiful beaches that run alongside the Pacific Ocean.

A visit to Manhattan Beach is a great, and cheap way to spend part of a day. This South Bay oasis located on Vista del Mar and Highland Avenue near Los Angeles International airport offers free and metered parking rather than expensive lots - a rarity in and around Southern California beaches.

Manhattan Beach's water quality is just fine in good weather, and there's also bike and walking paths, volleyball, fishing, and an aquarium on the pier. A lifeguard is also on duty for swimming, and surfing of course is popular. Pets and alcohol are not allowed on the beach. Restrooms and showers are also on-site. August is a popular month for beachy things to do in Los Angeles, as Manhattan Beach is home to the Surf Festival, Sand Castle Contest, and Open Volleyball Championships.

Zuma Beach, a north Los Angeles County spot, is especially noted for its clean water - which is unfortunately scarce in the city. During the week, there are far fewer visitors than during the week. Local residents simply call the beach "Zuma," and if seeing white sand is on your list of things to do in Los Angeles, you have found the right scene.

Zuma Beach offers plenty of parking, though mostly in a paid lot that can house more than 2,000 cars. Unlike a number of modern beaches, Zuma has its own snack bar with treats such as hot dogs, nachos, and soft drinks. Pets and alcohol are not permitted, but there is a boardwalk present. Surfing and swimming is monitored by a lifeguard. While Zuma Beach does have a significant surfing crowd, boogie boarding and body boarding are also especially popular aquatic pastimes. There is also winter whale watching, and year-round volleyball.

No matter which beach is on your list of things to do in Los Angeles, always play it safe by swimming with a friend or with a lifeguard present. Sunscreen is also an important investment of time and money, as the bright rays of the coastal sun can cause a serious burn that will hamper your fun trip to Los Angeles.
