Beachy Things to Do in San Francisco

A Guide to San Francisco Beaches

Stephanie Mojica
San Francisco is a famous "City by the Bay" noted for its ethnic diversity, compact size, dining, shopping, and culture. But what is often overlooked is that there are several things to do in San Francisco that involve the heart of California life - beaches. Though wearing a jacket is usually a good idea, since San Francisco can tend to the windy, milder side of the climate, the city is still a great place to check out some of the best beaches in California.

Ocean Beach, off the Geary Boulevard West on the Great Highway, is especially known for its bonfires. Wearing a jacket definitely is a must for this type of things to do in San Francisco, as they usually happen at night when the weather is especially cool. Alcohol and glass bottles are not allowed, but leashed, well-behaved pets are permitted.

This beach is often foggy and at times access is limited due to the many events and festivals in San Francisco. Swimming is not recommended due to the currents, but skimboarding and fishing are popular. Surfing is advisable only for the most experienced because of riptides. There are also plenty of land activities to enjoy, such as volleyball and kite-flying. There are restrooms, showers, and food available for Ocean Beach visitors.

Rodeo Beach is another one of the best things to do in San Francisco. North of the Golden Gate Bridge in the Marin Headlands, there are plenty of signs pointing out how to get to this spot in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Families and conservative people should be advised that part of Rodeo Beach is a nude beach, but there are still plenty of areas for traditional beachgoers.

Pebbles adorn this crescent-shaped beach, which is popular for beachcombing the multi-colored rocks. Things to do in San Francisco on Rodeo Beach include surfing, bonfires, swimming, and skimboarding. The two rocks offshore make photography especially popular, and the fresh-water lagoon on site draws a diverse bird population for photographers and birdwatchers alike. There is no food on site, but restrooms are present. Well-behaved and controlled pets are permitted.

Though a things to do in San Francisco schedule does not always include a beach, taking some time to enjoy a unique slice of California life is surely worth the effort. Kids and adults alike can enjoy the mild weather, scenic views, and maybe even a few outdoor sports.
