Bears Mess Up Signing Julius Peppers

Jacob Horn
I understand why the Bears did it. I really do and maybe I am just upset that my beloved Patriots did not get him but I don't think thats it. I think there are three possible situations that come from this signing.

A) Peppers is out of football in less than three years.

B) Peppers has six mediocre injury filled years and makes the top five list of the most highly overpaid players each year. Okay, I concede, maybe one or two above average seasons.

C) Peppers shows just enough burst on a few plays each game that another desperate team decides to take him off Chicago's hands once they realize he was not worth it. Bears end up with a 5th round draft pick.

You probably noticed there was no D option. The option that stated the Bears make the playoffs on the back of their defense led by Pro Bowler Julius Peppers. I am not saying the Bears won't make the playoffs but it will not be due to the efforts of Julius Peppers. Do you know how many players (above the age of 30) I have seen signed to long term deals based on past accomplishments succeed at a high level who also have a knack for taking off plays (also consider that the Bears have been one of the more unstable teams the past few years)? Very few. It is not that players above 30 don't have something to bring to the table; plenty of them do but very few succeed with Peppers attitude when they come to a team like the Bears.

The Bears will be regretting this move down the road. Peppers may have one, possibly two, good seasons and the last four years (assuming he is still in the NFL) he will average maybe 4-6 sacks a year if he plays all year. Nothing wrong with 4-6 sacks unless you are making the money Peppers is making. That kind of money calls for 12-14 sacks a year. The thing Peppers has going for him is Jay Cutler will do his best to keep him out on the field to make those sacks.
