Beat Menstrual Cramps Naturally with Chamomile

Most of us think of chamomile as an excellent relaxation remedy or a remedy for stomach problems. While these are two great uses for the plant, a more obscure use for chamomile is as a remedy for menstrual cramps. However, just because it's obscure doesn't mean it's ineffective. According to folk tradition, chamomile is used as a relaxant both for the nerves and for the muscles.

Why Chamomile is Good for Menstrual Cramps

One of the herb's principal actions is that it is an antispasmodic agent. This means that any part of your body that is in spasms and causing pain will be much relieved with this herb. In other words, the same aspect of the plant that settles the stomach also helps ease period cramps.

Type of Chamomile to Use for Period Cramps

There are several ways you can use this herb for menstrual cramps. You can drink chamomile tea, use the essential oil to make massage oil, or make a relaxing bath using the essential oil and/or the tea. You can use a combination of all of these methods.

Drink Chamomile Tea

The very first thing you should do once your cramps begin is to drink a cup of chamomile tea or two so that the herb can start working on your cramps. You should aim to have 3-4 cups per day at the onset of your cramps. Check with a doctor before you do, though to make sure this is safe for you to take. If you're allergic to ragweed, for example, you may also be allergic to chamomile.

Prepare an Herbal Bath

Not only will the chamomile help ease your cramps, but the heat from the bath water will also help soothe the cramps. To prepare the bath you can either pour the equivalent of four cups of chamomile tea into the bath, or add 15 drops of chamomile essential oil into the bath. I personally like the essential oil better for this purpose.

Make an Herbal Message

The last thing you can do is make an herbal massage. Just mix 15 drops of chamomile essential oil with ½ cup sweet almond oil. Massage in a circular motion over your abdomen or wherever the cramps are.

All three of these are some of my favorite tactics for beating menstrual cramps naturally with chamomile.
