In a way, Ringo Starr's request is understandable. Ringo Starr has a busy schedule touring with his All-Starr band. As a former Beatles' drummer, he has fans of all generations. He is probably overloaded with fan mail and does not want to spread himself too thin. After being in the public eye for more than four decades, Ringo Starr has probably grown weary of the responsibilities that come with being a celebrity. In the video announcement, he appeared tired and overwhelmed. Fame has its downside. This year in Liverpool, vandals beheaded a statue of Ringo Starr, possibly in response to a comment he had made about not missing his hometown.
Still, Ringo Starr shoots himself in the foot by burning bridges with his fans. While he may be overworked and overwhelmed, there are better ways to handle the situation. Such an announcement will likely cause backlash from fans. They may interpret his request as arrogant and standoffish. For fans who have purchased his music and attended his concerts, Ringo Starr's announcement is a slap in the face. Instead of blatantly cutting off communication with fans, he could have been more diplomatic. He could have explained that while he may not have time to answer every letter, he appreciates thanks his fans for their support. Ringo Starr and the Beatles would not have succeeded without the fans.
Ringo Starr and Other Beatles
Compared to his fellow Beatles, Ringo Starr is lucky to be alive and performing the music that he loves. John Lennon's career was tragically cut short by an assassination. And George Harrison died of throat cancer. Instead of alienating fans, Ringo Starr would do well to count his blessings.
The Beatles' Paul McCartney is an even bigger celebrity than Ringo Starr. Yet he manages to juggle music, fans, and a personal life. Ringo Starr would have been wise to ask advice from McCartney and to find out how he does it. Instead, Ringo Starr may lost some fans with this abrupt announcement.

Post a CommentThis seems unlike Ringo, he was always such a nice guy and he can't have much to do with that money.
haha I still love you, Ringo :D
I understand him not wanting to reply to all that fanmail after 40 years of doing so, but i think he could've handled that better
I'm surprised he was still signing autographs to this point. I should asked for one years ago.
the time of celebrities signing autographs for fans is coming to an end
Ringo is and was my favorite Beatle. I understand why he had to put a halt to fan mail. He could have been a little gentler with his approach though. Great article.
=)
Didn't know he was still alive....guess he won't be hearing from me! :)
Hmm, :) Sheri
but can we give him credit for honesty? There probably are a lot of celebrities who have said they appreciate the mail but don't have time to answer every one, and then toss out the mail. At last with Ringo, you know it's getting tossed. LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
