Beautiful Autumnal Hiking Trails in Hocking Hills, Ohio

Juliet Cook
This past summer, my husband and I embarked upon quite a few beautiful hikes in the Hocking Hills region of Logan Ohio. One great trait associated with the Hocking Hills (and this likely applies to most other locales with good hiking trails, too) is that scenic hikes are not limited to any one season of the year. Indeed, the scenery of a hiking trail will be uniquely different based upon the season, so for true aficionados of scenic natural vistas, it is highly recommended to try hiking your favorite trails during more than one season of the year.

The Hocking Hills offers a veritable and varied bounty of lovely landscape features, ranging from impressive sandstone rock formations to unique grottoes to gorgeous waterfalls to interesting foliage to stunningly distinctive caves. Speaking of those caves, one of the most popular hiking and sightseeing areas within the Hocking Hills is called Old Man's Caves. We have hiked this area in both summer and winter. Our winter hike was somewhat limited due to icy surfaces rendering some of the narrower and steeper parts of the trail potentially hazardous, but it was still a delightful treat to see the rock faces and waterfalls encased in an almost confectionery looking winter wonderland of snow and ice. I'm sure the autumnal scenery of Old Man's Caves would offer its own distinctive natural grandeur, too.

Although I have heard that many of the area's waterfalls are dry during the late summer and early autumn, the various Hocking Hills hiking trails have many other visual treats to offer, too. Equip yourself with weather appropriate attire and some good walking shoes and explore for yourself. Old Man's Caves and the Rockhouse trail are the most visually dramatic and offer moderately exhilarating hiking terrain, suitable for most adults and families with older kids. For hikers seeking a slightly more vigorous and challenging hike, consider the Cantwell Cliffs trail or the Conkles Hollow Rim trail (this routre is very high up with an occasionally narrow trail, which means breathtaking views, but also means exercise caution-and downright avoid this trail if it's icy). For groups that include younger kids or those with physical limitations who would like to experience some pretty scenery, but don't wish to overexert themselves, then the Conkles Hollow Gorge trail or the strikingly panoramic Ash Caves might be your best bet. All of these trails also allow leashed pets, with the exception of the Conkles Hollow trails.

Luckily, all of these trails are also located in fairly close proximity to each other (within approximately ten miles), so with a little planning ahead, you can fit in more than one trail in a day or maybe even during a special weekend getaway. The Hocking Hills area abounds with lodging, whether you'd prefer a rustic cabin secluded in the woods or a contemporary lodge with plenty of amenities. Autumn just might be the perfect season for a romantic little vacation with your special someone or a memorable family adventure. Imagine strolling through a uniquely scenic natural landscape with myriad colorful autumn leaves adorning your pathway. That surely sounds like some appealing hiking to me.
